Description
Nobuyuki Sanada is the eldest son of Masayuki Sanada and the older brother of Yukimura Sanada, first appearing as a unique character in Samurai Warriors 4. Born into the Sanada clan during a period of constant conflict, he was sent as a hostage to the Takeda clan to prove his family's loyalty, an early experience that taught him the value of patience and political survival. In the series, he is symbolized by the kanji for tolerance and heart, and by cherry blossom petals that are tied to Ueda Castle, the seat of Sanada independence. His personality is calm, calculating, and measured, standing in stark contrast to his younger brother Yukimura’s passionate and impulsive nature. Nobuyuki’s primary motivation is the preservation of the Sanada lineage, which leads him to make difficult strategic choices. He marries Ina, the daughter of Honda Tadakatsu and adopted daughter of Tokugawa Ieyasu, and through this political marriage aligns himself with the Tokugawa faction. During the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara, Nobuyuki fights for the Eastern Army under Tokugawa Ieyasu, while his father and brother side with the Western Army under Toyotomi. This decision creates a painful rift within his family. After Ieyasu’s victory, Nobuyuki uses his influence to spare his father and brother from execution, though they are exiled. Later, during the Siege of Osaka, Yukimura escapes exile and fights for the Toyotomi, leading Nobuyuki to reluctantly face his brother in battle; he is ultimately unable to save him. Despite these personal tragedies, Nobuyuki’s loyalty and service to the Tokugawa are rewarded. He becomes the first lord of the Matsushiro Domain and lives to an advanced age. On the battlefield, he is a capable commander and tactician, known for successfully defending Ueda Castle alongside his father against Tokugawa forces. His nickname among fans is the large vessel that protects Sanada’s lineage, reflecting his role as a stabilizing and forbearing figure who prioritizes the long-term survival of his clan over personal glory.
