Description
Kai is a playable character who first appeared in Samurai Warriors 3, having previously existed as a non-playable lady samurai bodyguard in Samurai Warriors 2. Her historical counterpart is thought to be the daughter of Ujinaga Narita, a figure known from legend for her bravery and beauty, though the accuracy of these accounts and even her historical existence remain unclear. She is primarily associated with the Hōjō clan, serving under the powerful lord Ujiyasu Hōjō, and later aligns with the Toyotomi forces.
Her personality is defined by a sharp contradiction between her identity as a fierce warrior and her secret longing to live as a traditional, elegant maiden. Raised from birth to fight, she possesses a daring, masculine pride and speaks in a frank, modern, and often aggressive manner. This tomboyish nature leads others to occasionally tease her, comparing her ferocity in battle to that of a wild beast. Despite her confidence and considerable skill, she is not the most tactful individual and can be mentally arrogant, yet she also lacks charisma and struggles with social insecurities. She is notably concerned with her appearance, believing that a warrior must look composed on the outside to feel composed within, and she spends considerable time on her makeup and hair. This vanity extends to a longing for a man's love, but her discomfort in social situations makes it difficult for her to speak to men, leading her to admire handsome warriors from afar. Her temper is quick to flare, and her approach to problem-solving tends to favor straightforward action and brute force over complex strategy.
Kai's primary motivation is to protect her home, her family, and her lord. Her journey begins as a fresh recruit for the Hōjō army, where she fights in battles such as Tonegawa and the defense of Oshi Castle. Her mentor, Ujiyasu Hōjō, is a blunt and straightforward man who gives her critical advice and treats her not as a delicate woman but as a soldier, often calling her boy or brat. His death is a turning point in her life; as he passes away, he entrusts her with the duty of continuing to protect the Hōjō family. This charge becomes the core of her purpose. After the fall of the Hōjō, she surrenders to the Toyotomi to spare her lady and continues to fight to uphold the last remnants of her lord's spirit. Her ultimate goal evolves from a simple duty to a desire for a normal, peaceful world, which leads her to join Yukimura Sanada's desperate final resistance at Osaka Castle.
Throughout the series, her key relationships heavily shape her path. Her bond with Ujiyasu is central; though annoyed by his rude nicknames and jokes about her beauty, she deeply respects his wisdom and his wishes to protect the common people. She also develops a strong relationship with the kunoichi Kunoichi. She views Kunoichi as a rival for the admiration of Yukimura and in terms of both beauty and battle prowess, and their interactions are often filled with bickering and insults. However, this rivalry softens over time, and Kai proves to be a kind and encouraging friend to her when the situation calls for it. In some story scenarios, she also forms a meaningful bond with Masamune Date, who saves her after the fall of the Hōjō, leading to a mutual respect. In later titles like Spirit of Sanada, she becomes a companion to Chacha, promising to bring happiness back into her world after suffering the loss of her own family.
Kai undergoes a clear development throughout her story. Initially presented as a somewhat arrogant and flippant fighter, her experiences in war mature her over time. She learns the true meaning of protecting something important to her, moving from simply following orders to understanding the weight of responsibility. After the death of Ujiyasu and the fall of her clan, she transitions from a simple servant of the Hōjō to a warrior fighting for a dream of peace and for a new family she has found among her allies. Her ultimate goal is not just victory, but to one day be able to look up at the heavens and ask her late lord if she has finally become the fine woman he would have wanted her to be.
In battle, Kai wields a unique and unconventional weapon known as the sword-whip or Jabaraken. This weapon can function as a standard sword at close range, but its segmented blade can extend outward to slash foes from a distance or pierce them, allowing her to swing enemies into the ground. Her fighting style is described as beginner-friendly, utilizing a majority of charge attacks that hit surrounding enemies in a large radius, making her versatile in both one-on-one duels and clearing large crowds. She also possesses the special skill to conjure water geysers to damage nearby enemies. Her moveset emphasizes her brute strength and courage, reflecting her preference for direct confrontation over tactical subtlety.
