Description
Kiyomasa Kato is a fictionalized portrayal of the historical Japanese daimyo, featured as a playable character in the Samurai Warriors series beginning with Samurai Warriors 3. In the game's narrative, he begins his career as a page under the rule of the powerful warlord Hideyoshi Toyotomi, rising through the ranks to become one of his most trusted and formidable generals. He is recognized as one of the celebrated Seven Spears of Shizugatake, a title earned for his exceptional bravery in a key battle.

His personality is defined by a hot-headed and rowdy nature, yet this is balanced by a deep and unwavering sense of loyalty, particularly towards Hideyoshi and his wife, Nene. He views them as his true family, with Hideyoshi as a father figure and Nene as a mother. Despite his rough exterior, Kiyomasa is portrayed as having a relatively sound head on his shoulders, often acting as the mature one among his close friends. He is known to look out for the scatter-brained Masanori Fukushima and tries to temper the cocky attitude of the intellectual Mitsunari Ishida. Kiyomasa is stubborn and adamant about his beliefs, refusing to bow down to others when he feels he is right.

His primary motivation throughout the story is to protect the legacy and the dream of a peaceful land that Hideyoshi worked to build. This goal puts him at the center of the political turmoil following Hideyoshi's death. He believes that the only way to safeguard the Toyotomi clan is to align with the powerful Tokugawa Ieyasu, which leads to a painful rift with his friend Mitsunari, who chooses to resist the Tokugawa militarily. This decision forces Kiyomasa to join the Eastern Army at the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara, a conflict that drives a wedge between the former friends. Following the battle, Kiyomasa remains a guardian of the Toyotomi cause, ultimately staking his life to defend Osaka Castle from Ieyasu's final assault, hoping to preserve the "home" he and his lord built.

Kiyomasa's key relationships are central to his character arc. He shares a fraternal bond with both Masanori Fukushima and Mitsunari Ishida. The trio are often referred to as idiots by other characters due to their bickering, but their shared oath to protect Hideyoshi's dream runs deep. His friendship with Mitsunari is particularly complex, marked by mutual respect and stubbornness, which makes their eventual separation due to political necessity a source of great tragedy. He also has a noted admiration for the warrior Muneshige Tachibana. His relationship with Nene is unique; while he considers her a precious mother figure and is fiercely loyal to her, the game and spin-offs also depict him as harboring a romantic infatuation with her, a trait that his friends find disturbing.

In terms of abilities, Kiyomasa is depicted as an exceptionally powerful warrior on the battlefield. His primary weapon is a large scythe or halberd, which he wields with devastating force. His fighting style is aggressive and straightforward, befitting his personality, and he is known for his wide attack range and powerful charge attacks. In later installments like Warriors Orochi 3, he is considered a high-tier character due to his strength and combat versatility. Beyond his martial prowess, the character is also noted for his skill in fortification and castle building, a nod to the historical figure's renowned expertise in this area.
