Description
Kazunari Takao is a first-year student at Shutoku High School, where he serves as the team's starting point guard, wearing jersey number 10. Standing 176 centimeters tall and weighing 65 kilograms, he was born on November 21. His family consists of his parents and a younger sister. He is a naturally cheerful, sociable, and talkative person who makes friends easily and looks for enjoyment in everything he does, particularly in playing basketball, which he finds genuinely fun rather than being solely focused on victory. His motto, "Enjoy life and you will win," reflects his positive and forward-looking attitude. Despite his easygoing nature, he is also highly observant and perceptive, often using his insights to support his teammates. He is not timid about speaking his mind and possesses a playful, sometimes mischievous side, frequently teasing his friends, especially his teammate Shintarou Midorima.
Takao's background includes a significant defeat at the hands of Midorima during a middle school match. He initially vowed to get revenge and trained hard to achieve this goal. However, when he entered high school, he found himself as Midorima's teammate on the Shutoku basketball team. After an initial period of rivalry, his animosity faded, and his motivation shifted toward earning Midorima's recognition and becoming a reliable partner for him. This partnership becomes the core of his role in the story, as together they form a formidable duo that supports Shutoku's backcourt. He also develops a keen interest in and rivalry with Tetsuya Kuroko from Seirin High, seeing a reflection of himself in Kuroko as a fellow first-year point guard and ace partner, and he considers Kuroko his natural enemy on the court.
Takao's most notable ability on the court is his "Hawk Eye," a special vision that grants him an extremely wide field of view, surpassing the "Eagle Eye" used by Seirin's point guard. This ability allows him to perceive the entire court at once without focusing on any single point, enabling him to make accurate blind passes and rapidly assess the positions of all players. Because his vision is so expansive, he is one of the few players who can see through Kuroko's misdirection, effectively nullifying his opponent's unique skill. The only known way to counter his Hawk Eye is for a player like Kuroko to draw Takao's focus completely onto themselves, forcing his vision to narrow and allowing an opening for misdirection to work again. Beyond this special skill, Takao possesses excellent fundamental abilities as a point guard, including quick direction changes, sharp judgment, high-speed dribbling, and skilled passing. He works tirelessly on his stamina and passing accuracy to support Midorima's shooting.
His most prominent relationship is with Shintarou Midorima, whom he affectionately and persistently calls "Shin-chan," much to Midorima's chagrin. Their bond extends beyond the court; they are close friends who are frequently seen together, with a running gag involving a bicycle and trailer where Takao almost always ends up pedaling while Midorima rides behind. Their basketball partnership culminates in a powerful combination technique known as the Sky Direct 3P Shot. This play involves Takao passing the ball directly into the hands of Midorima, who is already in his shooting motion, resulting in an extraordinarily fast and almost unblockable three-point shot. The technique was developed specifically to counter the defensive abilities of players like Akashi and represents the deep trust and understanding between the two players. This partnership is so close that others, like Seirin's captain Hyuuga, have compared them to the "light and shadow" of the Shutoku team. Over the course of the story, Takao demonstrates significant growth. He moves past his initial grudge against Midorima and dedicates himself to becoming a perfect supporting partner. He also recognizes the limitations of relying solely on his Hawk Eye and focuses on physical training to elevate his and Midorima's combination play to an even higher level, making their duo a more dangerous threat during the Winter Cup.
