Description
Darzana Magbaredge is an officer in the Earth military, holding the rank of Colonel or Captain and serving as the commanding officer of the amphibious assault ship Wadatsumi, and later the flying battleship Deucalion. Born Darzana Humeray on December 29, she is 27 years old at the start of the story. Following the deaths of her parents during the disaster known as Heaven's Fall, she was adopted by the Magbaredge family, which is the surname she uses.

Her past is deeply tied to a personal tragedy. She is the younger sister of John Humeray, a soldier who was killed in action on Tanegashima fifteen years before the main events. His death came at the hands of his own comrade, Koichiro Marito, who was forced to euthanize John when he became trapped in a burning tank. Darzana is aware that Marito was responsible for her brother's death and harbors complex feelings of hatred toward him for this reason. Despite this personal resentment, she maintains a professional relationship with him as a subordinate officer in her command.

As a commander, Darzana is defined by a strong sense of duty and a deep, empathetic concern for the safety of her crew and other civilians. She is quick to act, strict, and decisive in battle, but also careful and measured, avoiding unnecessary risks. She does not hold deep prejudices against Martians, which allows her to assess situations objectively. Her leadership style is notably hands-on; she is not afraid to personally join rescue operations and lead from the front, a trait that sets her apart from many other high-ranking officers. She is also shown to have a wry sense of humor, often teasing her executive officer, Kaoru Mizusaki, about her lack of romantic success.

Darzana plays a pivotal role as the captain of the Deucalion, a powerful Aldnoah-driven ship discovered on Tanegashima. Recognizing the strategic and political importance of the Martian Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia, she decides to protect her and support her mission for peace, demonstrating a clear understanding of the larger political landscape. Her motivation throughout the conflict is to protect those under her command while navigating the complexities of a war against the superior technology of the Vers Empire. She frequently clashes with the unrealistic and detached views of the military's higher echelons, showing a pragmatic and critical perspective on the chain of command.

Her key relationships significantly influence her actions. Beyond her tense and painful history with Marito, she builds a strong professional respect for the young prodigy Inaho Kaizuka, trusting his unorthodox tactics and strategic insights even when they involve great risk. She relies heavily on her steady and loyal executive officer, Kaoru Mizusaki, with whom she shares a close, bantering rapport. Her decision to safeguard Princess Asseylum shapes the course of the Earth forces' strategy throughout the second half of the conflict.

Over the course of the series, Darzana demonstrates notable development in her command style. While initially a strict and conventional captain, she becomes more willing to trust the unconventional methods of her crew, such as Inaho's strategies, and operate independently from a command structure she views as incompetent. She evolves from a ship captain following orders to a strategic leader who understands the value of political alliances, as shown by her defiance of a planned assassination of the Princess, believing that losing her would eliminate the last chance for peace. Her abilities lie in her tactical acumen, quick decision-making, and inspirational leadership. She is an elite officer who graduated from the military academy with excellent grades and is capable of commanding a ship through extreme combat situations, from atmospheric re-entries to space battles.
