Description
Kouichirou Marito is a former Earth military pilot who serves as a tactical advisor and mentor to the main protagonist, Inaho Kaizuka, in the anime Aldnoah.Zero. His past is central to his character: Marito was a young fighter pilot during the first battle of the Heaven’s Fall war, an event that saw the superpowerful Martian Kataphrakt known as the Nilokeras annihilate his squadron. He was the sole survivor of that massacre, an experience that left him with severe post-traumatic stress disorder, survivor’s guilt, and a deep-seated phobia of Martian Kataphrakts. This trauma caused him to abandon active combat duty and retreat to a logistical or training role.
In personality, Marito is gruff, weary, and often irritable, masking his anxiety and self-doubt with a cynical exterior. He drinks heavily and keeps to himself, yet beneath his rough demeanor lies a strong sense of responsibility and a protective instinct toward younger soldiers. He is pragmatic and unromantic about war, having witnessed its horrors firsthand, but he refuses to let his fear completely paralyze him. His motivations are driven by a need to redeem his perceived cowardice and to ensure that no one else endures the helplessness he felt. He is not seeking glory but rather a chance to face his trauma on his own terms, and to use his experience to help Earth’s forces stand against the Martian invasion.
Within the story’s Earth forces, Marito initially acts as an observer and training officer for the UEF’s 22nd Armored Combat Battalion. His role evolves from a cautious, backline advisor to an active participant in key battles, particularly when facing Kataphrakts that remind him of the Nilokeras. His relationship with Inaho Kaizuka is pivotal: at first, Marito is frustrated by Inaho’s cold, analytical genius, which lacks the emotional weight of combat experience. Over time, however, he comes to respect Inaho’s tactical brilliance, even as he worries about the young pilot’s emotional detachment. Marito also forms a close bond with Lieutenant Yuki Kaizuka, Inaho’s sister, who acts as a stabilizing influence and a bridge between Marito and the younger soldiers. Their quiet camaraderie and mutual support are key to Marito’s gradual recovery.
Character development sees Marito confront his trauma directly when he faces a Kataphrakt with abilities similar to the Nilokeras. Through these battles, he learns to channel his fear into focus rather than letting it control him. He does not fully conquer his PTSD—the series treats it realistically—but he achieves a functional peace, becoming a more effective leader and regaining his edge as a soldier. By the latter part of the story, he is able to pilot a Kataphrakt again without freezing, though the psychological scars remain.
In terms of abilities, Marito is an exceptionally skilled pilot with years of real combat experience, but his trauma limits his performance under extreme stress. When not impaired by flashbacks, he demonstrates sharp tactical judgment, keen situational awareness, and proficiency with standard UEF Kataphrakts. He is also a capable instructor, able to break down complex enemy tactics and convey survival lessons to rookies. While not as prodigiously gifted as Inaho, Marito’s strength lies in his hard-won instincts and his understanding of fear—knowledge he uses to help others survive where he once could not.
