Description
Calm Craftman is a supporting character who begins the story as a fifteen-year-old high school student in the city of Shinawara, later becoming a member of the Earth military forces. His background is marked by displacement, as he originally came from a country that was devastated during Heaven’s Fall, the first Earth-Mars war. Official supplementary materials reveal his homeland to be Canada, and he was forced to relocate to Japan as a refugee. This early experience of loss profoundly shapes his initial worldview.
In terms of personality, Calm is generally easy-going, boisterous, and energetic, often providing a contrast to the more serious demeanor of his friend Inaho Kaizuka. He has a habit of giving Martian units nicknames, such as calling the Nilokeras a pill-bug or the Martian sky carrier a bat, which reflects his informal and somewhat irreverent attitude. Despite his usual cheerfulness, he can lose his temper in battle and act impulsively, especially when driven by emotion. One of his notable weaknesses is being easily attracted to pretty girls, and he is known to tease his friends, particularly Inaho, about their personalities. However, beneath this lighthearted exterior is a capable individual who develops a strong sense of duty.
Calm’s motivations evolve significantly throughout the story. Initially, he holds a brief but intense hatred for Martians, which is fueled by the death of his close friend Okisuke Mikuni during the attack on Shinawara. This personal loss hardens his resolve against the invaders. His role in the story transitions from a student to a combatant and finally to a crucial support member. After enlisting in the military, he initially attempts to work as a pilot but discovers he is not particularly skilled at maneuvering the Kataphrakt mechs, earning a low grade in piloting exercises. Recognizing this limitation, he is assigned to become a maintenance soldier, or a mechanic, where he finds his true calling. By the second season, he has been promoted to the rank of maintenance chief aboard the Deucalion, serving as an indispensable asset to the crew by keeping the combat units operational.
Key relationships define his personal growth. His most important bond is with his classmate and friend, Inaho Kaizuka. Despite Inaho’s emotionless demeanor, Calm trusts him deeply and follows his orders without question, even as he playfully remarks on Inaho’s constant serious expression. The death of their mutual friend, Okisuke, is a pivotal event that cements Calm’s initial hatred for the Martians. His perspective begins to change dramatically upon meeting Princess Asseylum Vers Allusia. Even in her disguise, he is charmed by her, but it is his encounter with her true identity that forces him to reconcile his hatred for Martians with his inability to despise her, highlighting his capacity for growth and his inherently gentle nature.
Throughout his development, Calm transforms from an underachieving, somewhat lazy student into a professional and dedicated soldier. His character arc emphasizes the value of non-combat roles in a war, demonstrating how logistical and technical support is as vital as front-line combat. While he is not an exceptional pilot, his abilities as a mechanic are notable. He demonstrates a talent for machine maintenance and repair, working tirelessly to ensure the Kataphrakts are in peak condition. His technical skill culminates in a significant contribution late in the war, when he personally takes on the task of reinforcing and customizing Inaho’s final决战机体 (final battle unit) to face a formidable enemy, marking his evolution into a key member of the protagonist’s team.
