Description
Chiaya Misono is a central character from the original anime series The Rolling Girls. She is a young, petite girl with distinctive features including a snaggletooth and short, light-colored hair. At the beginning of her journey, Chiaya is almost always seen wearing a gas mask that conceals her face, a habit born from her overprotective upbringing. As the story progresses, she abandons the mask, revealing an open and cheerful countenance. She is often seen carrying a pink digital camera and riding a sky-blue scooter that resembles a classic Vespa.

Chiaya possesses a personality that is cheerful, curious, and straightforward, making her easily likable to both people and animals she encounters. She has an innocent and playful side, often referring to her traveling companions with their childhood nicknames, which she seems to have known for a long time. Despite her initial mysterious aura, Chiaya has a deep fascination with friendship, a desire stemming from a previously lonely and sheltered life. She is generally calm and kind-hearted, showing great support for her friends during their travels. Chiaya also has a notable fondness for takoyaki, especially the variety sold at the Moritomo restaurant.

The truth of Chiaya is that she is not an ordinary human girl but an alien from a distant planet. Her true form is that of a small, yellow, octopus-like creature. She came to Earth hidden inside an airship involved in an experiment called the Moon Hall project, which was being worked on by her adoptive mother, Haruka Misono, and another scientist. Discovered by Haruka, Chiaya was raised under her care and was never allowed to attend school due to concerns about her ability to adapt to Earth's environment. To hide her identity from the outside world, she was always required to wear her gas mask whenever she left home. Her initial motivation for traveling is to collect special heart-shaped stones known as cores or moonlit stones. She becomes the first client of the main protagonist, Nozomi Moritomo, and recruits her and her friends to join the search.

Throughout the story, Chiaya plays the role of the mysterious girl who brings the main group together and sets their journey in motion. Her key relationships are with the three other main girls: Nozomi Moritomo, Yukina Kosaka, and Ai Hibiki. She quickly develops a strong bond with them, and as they travel across a post-war Japan, she begins to value their friendship and companionship more than the stones she was originally seeking. She also has a significant relationship with her mother, Haruka Misono, who is extremely protective of her due to her true nature. Chiaya has a past connection to Nozomi, Yukina, and Ai, as they had all met and played with her when they were children, though the girls did not initially remember the encounter. This is how she knows their old nicknames.

Chiaya undergoes notable development from a girl who must hide her true self to one who accepts her origin and faces her future. After a series of events, she ultimately reveals her identity as an alien to her friends. In a bittersweet conclusion, she chooses to return to her home planet, joining the crew of an airship and bidding farewell to the friends she made on Earth.

Chiaya possesses several unique abilities that hint at her alien nature. She can use her camera to replay her own or other people's dreams and memories as videos, which serves as a useful way to communicate or reveal information. She also has the ability to understand and communicate with animals, which is why she is often seen surrounded by birds or other creatures. Furthermore, being an alien, her physiology allows her to adapt well to various challenging environments.
