Description
Nona is the manager of the arbiter system in the afterlife, overseeing the judgment of human souls. She resides on the ninetieth floor known as Nona Ginta, a misty, forest-like environment centered around a lake and her home. She has served as manager for eighty-two years, directing arbiters such as Decim, Ginti, Clavis, and others who run the judgment games on various floors. Her position grants her authority to assign cases, correct mistakes, and discipline arbiters who step out of line. She is also the bartender of Nona Ginta.
Physically, Nona appears youthful and petite, with pale skin and a braid of aqua blue hair secured with a sky blue ornament. Her purple eyes bear the arbiter cross, marking her as a non-human being, and her fingernails are painted the same shade as her hair. Her clothing is stylish and distinctive, featuring a white top with puffy sleeves, black high-waisted harem pants held by oversized suspenders, golden earrings, a red ribbon with a decorative pin at the collar, bracelets, and violet sandals. This appearance contrasts with the more formal look of other arbiters and reflects her independent nature.
Personality-wise, Nona is intelligent, calculating, and deeply experienced. She carries a serious and disciplined demeanor when managing her subordinates, and she is not afraid to be harsh or authoritative when necessary, especially when arbiters deviate from expectations. However, she is not needlessly cruel; her critiques stem from a desire to see the system improve. Most of the time, she is friendly, approachable, and lighthearted, occasionally displaying a playful or teasing side. She treats others with respect regardless of rank and encourages individuality, particularly in Decim. Her personality balances leadership with empathy, making her one of the few figures in the series who actively questions and seeks to evolve the afterlife's judgment system.
Nona's primary motivation is her belief that emotions are essential for truly understanding and judging human souls. This conviction leads her to secretly implant human emotions into Decim, an otherwise emotionless arbiter, as a personal experiment to test whether the system can be improved. She assigns a human woman with no memories, later known as the black-haired woman, to be Decim's assistant, hoping her human perspective will accelerate his emotional growth. To further test Decim's progress, she orchestrates a staged scenario with the help of Quin and Ginti, where Ginti disguises himself as a human participant. When Decim fails to respond appropriately, Nona intervenes and halts the conflict, disappointed but still determined. She then arranges for Decim to receive two marked souls, murderers typically judged only by the most experienced arbiters, believing that facing extreme cases of moral ambiguity is necessary for his growth. Throughout this, Nona must keep her actions hidden from Oculus, the god-like overseer who believes arbiters should remain purely objective and emotionless. When Oculus eventually uncovers her experiment by reading Clavis's memories, Nona stands her ground in a direct confrontation, refusing to abandon her belief in the value of emotion. After the experiment is exposed, she steps back from active interference and chooses to observe Decim from a distance, trusting him to make his own judgment regarding the black-haired woman on his own terms, not by the system's rules.
Her role in the story is central to the series' exploration of whether true judgment can exist without emotion. As the manager, she oversees the overall judgment process but is primarily focused on her experiment, which drives much of the narrative's philosophical tension. She is key to Decim's development and the broader questions the series raises about the nature of justice and humanity.
Nona's significant relationships include Decim, whom she handpicked as the subject of her experiment. She is often frustrated by his mistakes but respects his sincerity and insight, and she continues to support his growth even after setbacks. With Oculus, she appears to have a lighthearted relationship on the surface, as they frequently play billiards and exchange casual remarks, but underneath there is a deep philosophical tension over the role of emotion in judgment. Quin is a close friend and trusted ally with whom Nona often relaxes after work, confiding in her about Decim's emotional implant. Quin supports Nona by running errands and offering advice. Nona has little patience for Ginti's aggressive and impulsive behavior, frequently scolding or physically reprimanding him, though she acknowledges his ability as an arbiter. She maintains a friendly and respectful relationship with Clavis, who serves as a confidant and helper. Her relationship with Castra involves persuading her to send difficult cases to Decim to further the experiment.
Notable abilities include remarkable physical strength and combat skill despite her petite frame, allowing her to easily overpower Ginti and dodge attacks from Oculus. She also possesses the ability to induce sleep in others with a touch, and to awaken them in the same manner, with her bracelets glowing when she uses this power. This allows her to subdue others peacefully without violence.
