Description
Noriaki Kakyoin is a Japanese high school student who becomes a key ally in Stardust Crusaders after initially being introduced as an antagonist. During a prior trip to Egypt, he was intimidated by the vampire DIO, who implanted a flesh bud in his brain to control him. Under this influence, Kakyoin was sent to assassinate Jotaro Kujo. After being defeated and having the flesh bud surgically removed by Jotaro’s Stand, Star Platinum, Kakyoin regains his free will and joins the Joestar group’s journey to Egypt to save Jotaro’s mother, Holly, and to seek redemption for his actions while under DIO’s control.
Kakyoin’s personality is marked by intelligence, composure, and a strong sense of morality once freed from DIO’s influence. He is initially remote and solitary, having grown up as a lonely child, but gradually forms deep bonds with his companions. He demonstrates loyalty and a protective nature, especially toward innocent bystanders, and holds a disdain for those who use hostages. In battle, he is analytical and strategic, often deducing enemy Stand abilities and devising countermeasures. His calm demeanor is frequently punctuated by a methodical habit of eating cherries, a gesture that signals his focus under pressure. Despite his serious side, he shares a dry humor with the group, particularly Jean Pierre Polnareff, and values team harmony.
His motivations are driven by a desire to atone for his past and to protect his new friends. He views the journey as a chance to earn back his honor and to stop DIO’s threat for the sake of the world. His role within the Stardust Crusaders is that of a long-range combatant and the team’s primary strategist. He often scouts ahead using his Stand’s reach, identifies weaknesses in opponents, and provides critical information that enables the group to overcome powerful foes.
Key relationships include his closest peer, Jotaro Kujo, whom he respects and befriends after their initial conflict. He shares an easy camaraderie with Polnareff, often trading banter. He also works closely with Joseph Joestar and Muhammad Avdol, and cares for the stray dog Iggy. His bond with Jotaro is particularly significant, as the two are the youngest members and share a mutual understanding during the journey.
Kakyoin’s character develops from a lonely, isolated youth into a selfless and dependable ally. He learns to trust and rely on others, culminating in his final act of sacrifice. At the climax of the Egypt arc, he engages DIO’s Stand, The World, and is fatally wounded. In his dying moments, he uses Hierophant Green’s tentacles to carve a message on a distant water tower, revealing DIO’s ability to stop time. This revelation allows Jotaro to develop his own time-stopping power and ultimately defeat DIO.
Kakyoin’s Stand is Hierophant Green, a long-range humanoid Stand that can unravel into tentacles, allowing it to travel up to several hundred meters from its user. Its flexibility makes it suited for both reconnaissance and combat. Its signature attack is Emerald Splash, a rapid barrage of emerald energy projectiles. A more powerful variant, the 20‑meter Radius Emerald Splash, combines a barrier with the projectiles for area destruction. Hierophant Green can also possess and control organisms it enters, though Kakyoin rarely uses this ability after his redemption due to moral reservations. The Stand’s tentacle form can sense vibrations and automatically attack threats, making it an effective tool for scouting and defense.
