Description
Mariah is a secondary antagonist in the third part of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, Stardust Crusaders, specifically appearing in the Battle in Egypt arc. She is one of the Egypt 9 Glory Gods, a group of Stand users loyal to the vampire DIO, and is tasked with eliminating the Joestar group as they journey through Egypt toward Cairo. Mariah is a woman with short white hair and yellow eyes, often seen wearing sunglasses and casual attire. She is notably calm and collected, maintaining a cool demeanor as she orchestrates her attacks. However, she loses her composure when her plans go awry, revealing a more volatile side. She is also characterized by a distinctive laugh and a wide range of facial expressions, and she displays a particular attraction to older men, which influences her interactions with Joseph Joestar.

Her Stand is named Bastet, after the Egyptian goddess. Bastet takes the form of an ordinary electrical outlet that can be placed on any surface. Anyone who touches the outlet receives an electric shock and becomes magnetized. This magnetism starts weak, attracting small metal objects like bottle caps and forks, but as the victim remains within Mariah's range, the effect grows exponentially stronger. Eventually, huge metal objects such as railroad tracks, cars, and structural beams are drawn to the magnetized person, burying them in a lethal avalanche of metal. Bastet has no direct combat ability; its strength lies in its deceptive nature and the way it exploits curiosity. The Stand's user must stay within a certain distance of the victims for the effect to persist; if she moves too far away, the magnetization weakens and eventually wears off.

In the story, Mariah separates the Joestar group in Luxor, using Bastet to magnetize Joseph Joestar and Muhammad Avdol. She then attempts to kill them by luring them into dangerous situations, including almost getting them hit by a train and trying to electrocute them with high-voltage wires. Throughout the battle, Mariah remains methodical and confident, enjoying the psychological torment of her victims. However, Joseph and Avdol eventually outsmart her by using their own magnetized bodies to drag each other out of danger and then charge into Mariah, slamming her between them. The impact fractures all the bones in her body, deactivating Bastet and leaving her hospitalized and unable to continue fighting.

Mariah's motivations are straightforward: she serves DIO and aims to kill the Joestar party to earn his favor or ensure his victory. She shows no deeper philosophy or backstory beyond her loyalty to DIO. Her role in the arc is that of a mid-level threat that tests the group's ingenuity and teamwork, particularly highlighting the resourcefulness of Joseph and Avdol. In terms of development, Mariah does not undergo any significant change; she remains an unrepentant enemy until her defeat. Her key relationship is with her victims Joseph and Avdol, against whom she holds a strategic and somewhat mocking attitude. She also interacts with her fellow DIO loyalists offscreen, but those connections are not explored in depth.

Notable abilities include her Stand Bastet's magnetic manipulation, which she uses creatively to turn the environment against her opponents. She also demonstrates a talent for psychological manipulation, misleading Joseph and Avdol into believing they can escape the magnetism by running away, only to reveal that staying within her range is fatal. However, her overconfidence in her trap proves to be her downfall. Overall, Mariah serves as a memorable obstacle in the Battle in Egypt arc, known for her unique Stand and her psychological duel with two of the series' most strategic heroes.
