Description
Muhammad Avdol is an Egyptian fortune teller and a close friend of Joseph Joestar. Born in Cairo in the late 1960s, he has been a Stand user since birth, wielding the fire-manipulating Stand known as Magician's Red. Prior to the main events, he was one of the first people to encounter Dio after his resurrection and barely escaped with his life, which led him to ally with Joseph. He also met and subdued the Stand‑wielding dog Iggy before the journey began. Avdol's background as a native Egyptian gives him deep knowledge of local cultures, geography, and the nature of Stands, making him an invaluable guide for the group.
Avdol is characterized by a serious, dedicated, and cautious demeanor. He often serves as the voice of reason within the Stardust Crusaders, advocating for careful planning and restraint, especially in contrast to the impulsive natures of Jean Pierre Polnareff and Joseph. He is highly loyal and protective of his comrades, repeatedly putting himself in mortal danger to save them. His main motivation is to defeat Dio and protect his friends, showing a willingness to sacrifice everything for the greater good. He also expresses strong moral outrage when innocent lives are harmed, as seen when the Stand Tower of Gray kills unrelated bystanders.
Within the story, Avdol acts as Joseph's second‑in‑command. He initially helps assess Jotaro Kujo's situation in Japan, explains the nature of Stands, and accompanies the group from the very beginning. He defeats Polnareff in Hong Kong and later helps him join the team after Jotaro removes Dio's parasitic flesh bud. Avdol is seemingly killed by Hol Horse's trick bullet while saving Polnareff, but he fakes his death to obtain a submarine, later revealing the ruse in time to help the group reach Egypt. After arriving in Egypt, he, Polnareff, and Iggy navigate Dio's mansion. In the final confrontation, Avdol sacrifices himself against the vampire Vanilla Ice, losing both arms and being erased from existence after saving Polnareff and Iggy. His death is a pivotal emotional moment that reinforces the themes of loyalty and sacrifice.
Avdol's key relationships include his deep mutual respect with Joseph Joestar, whom he has known for years. He acts as a mentor figure to Polnareff, often guiding the hot‑headed Frenchman and later becoming his protector. He also shares a bond with Iggy, having been the one to initially tame the stubborn dog. His interactions with Jotaro and Noriaki Kakyoin are more professional, but he treats them as valued allies.
His notable ability is Magician's Red, a humanoid bird‑like Stand that can generate and manipulate fire at will. Avdol uses it both offensively and defensively: he can create intense flames hot enough to melt metal projectiles in mid‑air or destroy train tracks, form fire walls and barriers, and launch incendiary projectiles. The flames are invisible to non‑Stand users but still have physical effects. Avdol also demonstrates clever tactical uses, such as using his jewelry to simulate footsteps to trick an enemy who senses vibrations. He is highly experienced in combat and prefers open spaces to fully exploit Magician's Red's power. Despite his abilities, his effectiveness depends on his focus and the environment, and he shows moments of vulnerability that underline the danger of facing Dio's assassins.
