Description
Hinami Fueguchi is a young ghoul whose life is profoundly shaped by loss. Her parents, ghouls attempting to live a peaceful life, were both killed by CCG investigators. After her mother was killed before her eyes in Tokyo's 20th Ward, the orphaned Hinami was taken in and protected by the staff of the Anteiku café. She is a shy, gentle, and inherently pacifistic girl, reluctant to resort to violence even for revenge. Despite her traumatic experiences, she possesses a kind heart and a strong eagerness to learn, particularly through reading, as she is unable to attend a normal school.
Hinami develops a deep, sibling-like bond with both Ken Kaneki and Touka Kirishima. Kaneki becomes a mentor to her, helping her with difficult words in her favorite books, particularly those by her favorite author, Sen Takatsuki. Touka acts as a fierce and protective older sister. When Kaneki decides to leave Anteiku to form his own group, Hinami, who worries about his increasingly sad and stoic demeanor, chooses to follow him. Her primary motivation is to support and protect those she loves, especially Kaneki, whose happiness she deeply desires. Following the events that disband Kaneki's group, she joins the Aogiri Tree organization, in part to search for Kaneki, who has gone missing.
Throughout the story, Hinami demonstrates significant growth. She evolves from a timid, grieving child into a more composed and capable young woman. Her experiences force her to adopt a more realistic outlook on the harsh world of ghouls and investigators, yet she retains her core gentle nature and reluctance to kill, which she sometimes views as a weakness. Within Aogiri Tree, her unique talents are recognized, and she rises to a leadership position, taking on responsibilities such as information gathering, strategy, and command. Her defining moment comes when she risks her life to rescue a memory-wiped Haise Sasaki (the human identity taken on by Kaneki), determined to protect the person she still considers her brother, regardless of whether he remembers her.
Hinami possesses several notable abilities that make her exceptionally powerful. Unlike most ghouls who inherit only one type of Kagune (a ghoul's predatory organ and weapon), Hinami is a natural chimera who inherited both of her parents' Kagune types. She can manifest a Koukaku Kagune from her shoulder blades, which is a dense, metallic-like shield for defense. Simultaneously, she can produce a Rinkaku Kagune from her waist, which takes the form of multiple powerful, tentacle-like limbs for offensive attacks. This combination makes her a formidable fighter, with her Koukaku providing protection while her Rinkaku delivers devastating blows. Complementing her Kagune is her possession of extraordinarily keen senses. Her sense of smell allows her to track individuals across long distances, while her hearing is so acute she can eavesdrop on conversations and analyze multiple audio streams simultaneously to extract critical information. These abilities make her a valuable asset, both in combat and in intelligence operations.
