Description
Jirō is the fourth chief of Kurama Mountain, a tengu who rose to leadership after the third chief, Soujōbō, fell ill with an unknown and incurable sickness. As the strongest tengu on the mountain in terms of both speed and power, Jirō stepped into the role of leader, becoming responsible for governing all the tengu who live there. In his youth, he was a severe and demanding individual who trained relentlessly in his own quest for strength. This harshness extended to how he treated other young tengu whom he considered weak, most notably Shinjirō Kurama. Believing that coddling prevented growth, Jirō once forced a young Kurama into a life-threatening situation with a monster called the Raijiuyuu to forcibly awaken his survival instincts and ability to fly.
At the start of his time as chief, Jirō was known as a cruel and merciless leader. He ran the mountain with a philosophy that equated physical strength with worth, banishing any tengu who showed signs of weakness without consideration for their other qualities. This brutal efficiency was partly influenced by Yatori, a demon who insinuated himself into the mountain as an advisor. Under this guidance, Jirō expelled many residents and the mountain began to decline. However, his entire demeanor changed after a chance encounter with Nanami Momozono beneath a sacred thousand-year-old cherry tree. He was immediately captivated by her, a feeling he refuses to openly admit, and finds himself distracted by thoughts of her to the point that the protective barriers he places around his temple weaken. Yatori notes that the chaos within Jirō's own heart is the cause of this decline in vigilance. Through his interactions with Nanami, Jirō begins to learn that raw power is not the only measure of a person, and his attitude softens considerably, making him far kinder to those around him.
In the story, Jirō serves as a formidable obstacle and a complex antagonist during the tengu arc. He holds the missing Soujōbō captive within his compound, surrounded by magical and physical barriers. This situation forces Kurama, Nanami, and Tomoe to devise a plan to sneak into the mountain and deliver magical peach pills meant to cure the ailing chief, unaware that he is suffering from a stolen soul rather than a normal illness. Despite his gruff exterior, Jirō’s motivations are rooted in a twisted sense of duty and a desire to maintain the mountain's strength. His key relationships are fraught with tension and change. With Kurama, his history is one of abuse and exile, creating a deep rift. With Yatori, he is a dupe, unknowingly being manipulated to help the demon take over the mountain and prove himself to the villain Akura-ō. His relationship with Nanami is the most transformative. He develops serious romantic feelings for her, and when she is attacked by the Raijiuyuu after Yatori’s betrayal is revealed, Jirō heroically sacrifices himself to save her. Lying injured, he confesses his love, believing it to be his final act. After he recovers thanks to Nanami’s medicine, he indirectly proposes to her, asking her to stay on the mountain. When she gently refuses, he accepts her decision and allows her to leave, forever cherishing the image of her among the cherry blossoms. In later events, Jirō continues to harbor feelings for Nanami, but he is content simply knowing she is happy elsewhere.
Jirō possesses several notable abilities befitting the strongest tengu on Kurama Mountain. He can fly using the large, powerful black wings on his back. He is also highly proficient in creating potent barriers that can disorient and nullify the spiritual powers of others, such as when he prevents Nanami from using her talismans to locate the hidden chief. His unsurpassed strength and speed are his primary assets as a warrior and leader. Physically, he is an adult male with a rough, severe face marked by two scars, one near his right cheek and another on the left side of his jaw. He has short, neat black hair and typically wears a traditional kimono with a green robe and large red beads around his neck and shoulders.
