Description
Akira Takaoka is a character introduced as a new physical education instructor sent by the Ministry of Defense to assist with the training of Class 3-E. His background is rooted in a military career, where he served as a drill instructor in the same airborne unit as Tadaomi Karasuma. During his time in the military, he developed a method of producing loyal, elite soldiers in a short period by fostering a tight-knit "family" dynamic while simultaneously ruling as a violent, dictatorial father figure.
On the surface, Takaoka initially presents himself as a kind, helpful, and gentle giant with a notable fondness for sweets. He appears approachable and friendly, quickly trying to ingratiate himself with the students. This facade, however, conceals a deeply sadistic and brutal personality. His true nature is that of a thuggish disciplinarian who believes in an educational philosophy of "90% fear and 10% affection," asserting that subjects who are continuously subjected to brutality will weep with joy over the smallest sliver of kindness. He does not hesitate to use physical violence against anyone who defies him, including the students, such as kneeing a student in the stomach or slapping another for objecting to his harsh training regimen.
Takaoka's primary motivation is driven by a bitter rivalry with his former comrade, Tadaomi Karasuma. He harbors intense jealousy because Karasuma consistently achieved superior results during their time together in the military. Takaoka sees his assignment to Class 3-E as the perfect opportunity to prove his own methods are superior, gain fame by producing the student who successfully kills Koro-sensei, and ultimately force Karasuma to acknowledge him and become his subordinate. He views the students not as individuals to be educated, but as tools to be used for his own personal glory.
In the story, Takaoka serves as an early antagonist who attempts to take over the assassination training of Class 3-E. He implements a brutal training schedule and violently suppresses any dissent. His role culminates in a wager with Karasuma: if any student can stab him with a knife, he will leave. He chooses to use a real knife, believing his size and experience will guarantee victory and allow him to brutally punish the chosen student to terrorize the rest. He is defeated by Nagisa Shiota, a student he had dismissed as the weakest. Following his humiliating loss and subsequent firing, Takaoka becomes mentally unhinged, scratching his own face and stealing funds to hire assassins to poison the students during a summer training camp on a remote island, seeking revenge against Nagisa and the entire class.
Key relationships define his actions. His rivalry with Tadaomi Karasuma is central to his character, representing his deep-seated inferiority complex. His obsession with Nagisa Shiota begins after his first defeat; he is haunted by nightmares of Nagisa's "assassination face" and his humiliation at the hands of a child he perceived as weak. This obsession drives him to madness, leading to a final confrontation where his revenge is again thwarted by Nagisa. He also has a habit of sticking out his tongue when he believes he has the upper hand.
Takaoka undergoes a significant negative development. He starts as a confident, if secretly cruel, instructor but descends into insanity after his initial defeat. He becomes a desperate, self-destructive fugitive, his physical appearance deteriorating with self-inflicted scars. In his final appearance during the island arc, his mental state has collapsed to the point where he is reduced to a vegetative state upon seeing Nagisa's smile once more. In some epilogue materials, it is noted that he was later secretly released from custody and bizarrely began to worship Nagisa as a deity, showing the complete reversal of his former arrogance.
Notable abilities include his immense physical strength and combat experience as a trained soldier, which he uses to overpower opponents. He is a capable, if unorthodox, drill instructor with a specific, abusive methodology. However, his arrogance and psychological fragility prove to be critical weaknesses, as he is consistently outmaneuvered by Nagisa's unconventional assassination techniques and emotional control.
