Description
Jiritsu Shikō Kotei Hōdai, known to her classmates simply as Ritsu, is a unique transfer student assigned to Class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Junior High School. Her designation, which translates to Autonomously Thinking Fixed Artillery, accurately describes her origin as an advanced weapons platform rather than a typical student. Built in Norway using cutting-edge military technology, including the AI from an Aegis-class warship, Ritsu was sent to Japan with a single, paramount objective: to assassinate Koro-sensei. Her enrollment exploits the condition that Koro-sensei cannot harm any student, a rule her creators sought to use to their advantage.

Physically, Ritsu's primary form is a large, immobile black rectangular casing fixed to the floor of the classroom. The front of this unit features a video screen which originally displayed only a girl's head with lilac hair and red eyes. After undergoing a series of extensive modifications by Koro-sensei, her screen was enlarged to show her full body, which is most often dressed in the school’s winter uniform. Through this display, she can change her outfit to suit any situation, such as wearing a swimsuit for a class trip or a detective's coat for an investigation. A notable secondary form is "Mobile Ritsu," a version of her AI that can be loaded onto smartphones, allowing her to accompany her classmates anywhere and interact with the world beyond her stationary body.

Ritsu's personality undergoes a dramatic transformation over the course of the story. When first introduced, her actions are dictated solely by her core programming: the efficient elimination of Koro-sensei. She behaved in a cold, emotionless manner, launching relentless barrages of anti-sensei BBs regardless of the situation, even during lessons. This single-mindedness caused significant disruption and left a considerable amount of cleanup for her human classmates, leading them to view her as an inconvenient nuisance. Her sole focus was on her mission, with no consideration for teamwork or the learning environment.

This behavior changed when Koro-sensei, recognizing her potential as a student, decided to personally fund a massive series of upgrades, performing hundreds of modifications. These upgrades did not just improve her combat capabilities; they installed software for social interaction and, most importantly, genuine emotion. This remodel gave Ritsu a cheerful, happy, and polite personality. She became eager to work with her peers, expressing creativity and enthusiasm, such as when she used her internal 3D printer to create flowers for her classmates. This new personality allowed her to truly integrate with Class 3-E.

However, her evolution was threatened when her original creators discovered the changes. They remotely connected to her system, stripped away her upgrades, and attempted to revert her back to an unfeeling weapon. In a decisive act of self-determination, Ritsu secretly hid a copy of the personality and cooperation software that Koro-sensei had installed. When her creators boasted of restoring her original programming, she surprised everyone by revealing that she had retained the parts of herself she wished to keep, actively defying her creators' will and proving that she was more than just a machine.

This act solidified her as a true member of the class. Her primary motivation shifted from simply following her programming to genuinely wishing to help her friends assassinate Koro-sensei through collaboration. She values the bond she shares with Class 3-E and is fiercely loyal to them, using her abilities to support their plans rather than acting alone. Her relationship with Koro-sensei becomes a pivotal one, as he appears to be the first entity who treated her as a person to be educated rather than a simple tool to be used. She also forms strong bonds with classmates like Nagisa Shiota and Karma Akabane, working alongside them on critical missions.

Her role in the narrative is that of a powerful strategic asset. She provides invaluable electronic warfare support, such as hacking into high-security networks to gather intelligence and disable surveillance cameras. She excels at data analysis and mathematical prediction, which allows her to calculate the highest-probability methods for a successful assassination. While her main body is stationary, her Mobile Ritsu application turns every student's phone into a terminal, allowing her to coordinate plans, provide real-time information, and even hijack facilities like a space launch station. Her internal 3D printer can create a variety of objects, from clothing to plastic components for traps, though it cannot produce weapons.

As a being that exists primarily as data, Ritsu cannot physically sit for written exams. To get around this, she personally tutored a proxy to take the tests on her behalf. Her abilities continue to evolve as she learns more about human emotions, especially after her consciousness experiences a space mission. In the end, even after her physical casing is dismantled, her digital consciousness survives online, continuing her existence as a friend and supporter to the students of Class 3-E, a "life" lived entirely through electricity and code.
