Description
Mamedai Kitashirakawa is the father of Tamako Kitashirakawa and her younger sister Anko, and the widowed husband of the late Hinako Kitashirakawa. He runs Tamaya, the family mochi shop located in the Usagiyama shopping district. Mamedai is a middle-aged man with short black hair and brown eyes, and he usually wears casual clothing. He inherited the shop from his own father and takes great pride in his work, valuing the traditions of mochi-making that have been passed down through his family.

In terms of personality, Mamedai is outspoken and does not hesitate to express his thoughts and feelings openly. He holds strong traditional values, which is evident when he initially rejects Tamako’s ideas for Valentine-themed mochi, preferring to stick to the established recipes and methods. Despite this conservative streak, he has a soft and caring side that he shows toward his family. His love for his daughters and his late wife runs deep, and he quietly supports them in his own way. For example, on Valentine’s Day he secretly makes heart-shaped mochi, revealing a willingness to bend tradition when it comes to showing affection.

Mamedai’s primary motivation is the well-being of his family and the continued success of his family’s mochi business. He works hard every day to maintain the shop and uphold the relationships he has built with customers over many years. He also acts as a grounding influence for Tamako, offering guidance when she faces important decisions about her future. In the events of Tamako Love Story, he plays a supportive role as his daughter navigates her feelings for her childhood friend Mochizou Ooji. When Mochizou leaves for university plans, Mamedai encourages him to come back, showing his concern not only for his own family but also for the people close to them.

Key relationships in his life include his daughter Tamako, whom he gently guides even as she begins to step away from the family shop to pursue her own path; his younger daughter Anko, who is less interested in the mochi business than Tamako; his late wife Hinako, whose memory he cherishes; and the Ooji family, especially Gohei Ooji, with whom he shares a friendly rivalry from time to time. His interactions with the broader shopping district community demonstrate his respected standing among the local shopkeepers.

Throughout both the Tamako Market series and Tamako Love Story, Mamedai shows subtle character development. He begins as a figure of strict tradition but gradually opens up to the idea of change, especially as it relates to his daughter’s happiness. In the film, he gives Tamako the space to make her own choices while still offering quiet support. His notable abilities center on his craftsmanship as a mochi maker, a skill he has honed over decades and which forms the backbone of his identity and his family’s livelihood.
