Description
Kei Karima is a character from the anime Gundam Build Fighters Try who serves as the leader of Team Great K, representing Honmoku Academy from Kanagawa Prefecture. He is a regular participant in the national Gunpla Battle tournament. Physically, he is a young man with curly, shoulder-length black hair and blue eyes. His typical attire consists of a red t-shirt, a black vest, and blue jeans.
Karima possesses a very light and boastful personality, often making flashy attempts to appeal to those around him. He holds a high opinion of his own piloting skills and can be quite disrespectful toward fighters he deems less capable. This arrogance leads him to challenge opponents not for a genuine contest, but to use them as a means to gauge the abilities of other, more worthy adversaries. For instance, he challenges Sekai Kamiki solely because Sekai had previously fought Saga Adou, a fighter Karima respects, effectively attempting to use Sekai as a measuring stick for the Gunpla Academy's power. Despite his grand self-image, a running gag throughout the series is that he is profoundly forgettable. Other characters, including rivals he has battled before, consistently fail to remember his name or face, much to his chagrin and embarrassment.
Karima's primary motivation is to defeat the powerful Gunpla Academy, especially after having lost to them in the previous year's tournament. To achieve this, he favors overwhelming firepower, specializing in the creation and piloting of large mobile armors. His most notable creation for the national tournament is the Vagan Gear K, a gold-colored mobile armor based on the Vagan Gear Sid from Mobile Suit Gundam AGE, which he built specifically to destroy the Gunpla Academy. His piloting style relies on the sheer destructive force of such units to annihilate opposing Gunpla.
In the story, Karima acts as a minor rival and a representative of a skilled but ultimately outmatched team. His role often highlights the immense gap in ability between the national-level contenders and the series' prodigies. A key relationship is his rivalry with the Gunpla Academy, particularly its ace, Wilfrid Kijima. Karima challenges Kijima to a fight, even goading him to use his full strength while holding back himself, but is easily overpowered. Another significant interaction is with Shia Kijima, Wilfrid's sister. In the national tournament, Karima confidently deploys his specially-made Vagan Gear K, only to be unilaterally and effortlessly defeated by Shia in her G-Portent, leading to a near-mental collapse.
Over the course of the series, Karima's development is less about personal growth and more about the comedic and pathetic deflation of his ego. Initially presented as a potentially cunning and strategic fighter, he is quickly exposed as a small-time character whose arrogant bluster is repeatedly undercut by his actual performance and the universe's indifference to him. This culminates in his final appearance at the Meijin Cup, where he submits the massive XMA-01 Rafflesia from Mobile Suit Gundam F91. The Gunpla is disqualified simply for being too large to fit in the display case. While he suffers from constipation in the bathroom, missing the awards ceremony, his disqualified model is mocked. Enraged by his failure to win, he unleashes the Rafflesia's army of Bugs to attack the venue, only to have them all destroyed by other participants. His abilities as a builder focus on constructing large-scale mobile armors, while his piloting skills, though presumably competent enough to reach the national level, are shown to be vastly inferior to the series' top-tier fighters.
