Description
Jurai Ando is the seventeen-year-old protagonist of the story, a student in class 2-1 at the private Senko High School where he is a member of the Literature Club. He lives with his older sister, Machi Ando. On the surface, Jurai is a dedicated practitioner of chuunibyou, a condition marked by grandiose delusions of supernatural power. He adopts the dramatic alias Guiltia Sin Jurai and carries a notebook he calls the Blood Vivre, which he treats as a mystical grimoire. However, his initial delight turns to slight disappointment when he discovers his real power is not the ultimate weapon he had imagined. He named his ability Dark and Dark, a black flame that seems to emanate from his right hand but is incapable of burning objects or causing real harm—it merely produces a chilly, low-temperature fire. Despite its obvious limitations in practical combat, he treasures it because it looks undeniably cool, a sentiment that perfectly encapsulates his character.

Beneath his flamboyant and energetic exterior, Jurai possesses a surprisingly grounded and pragmatic personality. While he revels in fantasizing about epic superpowered battles, he is paradoxically the most level-headed and cautious member of the group when it comes to their real abilities. He consistently warns his friends against using their powers carelessly or for personal gain, demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility that contrasts with his delusional antics. He is genuinely kind, caring, and perceptive of others' emotional states, often knowing exactly the right words to say to encourage a friend who is feeling down. This compassionate nature, combined with his surprisingly decent academic performance, makes him more reliable than his chuunibyou persona would suggest. His one notable blind spot is his complete obliviousness to the romantic affection several of his female club members have for him.

Jurai's motivations are rooted in a deep-seated desire for the extraordinary, but his journey is defined by his struggle to reconcile fantasy with reality. He was the one who named all the supernatural abilities the Literature Club members acquired, a moment that should have been the fulfillment of all his dreams. However, his primary role within the story is not as a powerful warrior but as the emotional anchor of the group. He is the glue that holds the Literature Club together, and his relationships with each member are central to the narrative. He has a long and complex history with his childhood friend, Hatoko Kushikawa, and there is a notable tension created by his desire to protect her feelings while clinging to his own fantasies. His mentorship-like relationship with the younger Chifuyu Himeki often sees him acting as an older brother figure, and his dynamic with the club president, Sayumi Takanashi, involves a mix of respect and good-natured teasing. A pivotal relationship that shaped his past is with Shizumu Sagami, a figure from middle school he describes as being "more than acquaintances but less than friends".

Jurai's character undergoes significant development as his past is explored and he is forced to confront the gap between his fantasies and real life. His most critical development occurs in his middle school years, where a deeply painful incident involving his friends Shizumu Sagami and Tamaki Futaba led him to nearly abandon his chuunibyou identity and his love for manga and anime altogether. He was only pulled back from the brink by a chance encounter with a mysterious silver-haired girl in a park, who inspired him to embrace his true, eccentric self. He made a promise to tell her his real name when they met again, an event that shaped his identity for years to come before he later realized the girl was his classmate Tomoyo Kanzaki.

Even after awakening to his real superpowers, Jurai's commitment to his fantasy is tested. He shows a willingness to abandon his chuunibyou ways for the sake of Hatoko's feelings, indicating that his real-world connections are ultimately more important to him than his delusions. This internal conflict reaches its peak when he discovers the dangerous awakened form of his power. The evolved ability, which he names Dark and Dark of the End, or "the one who draws the final curtain," is a genuine and terrifying flame that can burn uncontrollably, harming both the target and Jurai himself. In a moment of crisis, he sacrifices his own hand by using this forbidden power to save a friend, an act that requires Sayumi to use her abilities to regenerate it afterward. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the real consequences that come with the supernatural abilities he once only dreamed about.
