Description
Belzebuth is a major antagonist in the anime Rage of Bahamut: Genesis, depicted as an immensely powerful demon of high standing. His name is derived from Beelzebub, a figure often associated with the Devil or a high-ranking demon in mythological traditions, which in Hebrew can be interpreted as Lord of the Flies. Physically, Belzebuth has a formidable and monstrous appearance. He is tall and muscular, with deep red skin, white hair atop his head, and two large, prominent horns. His arms are covered in black scales from the elbows down to his fingertips, and his legs are similarly scaled. He has blue stripes on his face and carries a long, thin black staff with a wide blue top, which he uses as both a weapon and a tool for his magical abilities.

In terms of personality, Belzebuth is defined by his overwhelming ambition and his ruthless, power-hungry nature. He is cruel and manipulative, viewing all other beings, including his own kind, as either tools to be used or obstacles to be eliminated. His primary motivation is the total domination of the world. He seeks to exterminate the gods and overthrow the existing demon leadership, including the Demon Lord Lucifer, to place himself at the top of all creation. He believes that demons are the superior race, but this belief does not grant any immunity to his fellow demons; he is more than willing to harm or kill them if they stand in his way.

Belzebuth’s central role in the story is that of the mastermind behind the plan to reawaken the legendary dragon Bahamut, a creature of apocalyptic power. Believing that he could control Bahamut if the key to its seal was made from his own essence, he conspired with a human sorcerer named Martinet, who was also known as Gilles de Rais. To this end, Belzebuth kidnapped an innocent angel named Nicole. He painfully extracted her essence and combined it with his own to artificially create a hybrid child, a half-angel, half-demon girl named Amira. Amira was designed to be the living vessel for the two halves of the Transcendent Key, the artifact needed to break Bahamut’s seal. For years, he remained in the background, letting Martinet manipulate events from the shadows to ensure Amira would eventually be brought to the seal and fulfill her purpose.

A key relationship for Belzebuth is with his creation, Amira, whom he views not as a daughter but purely as a means to an end. He shows no paternal affection for her, coldly manipulating her emotions and ultimately sacrificing her to achieve his goal. His relationship with his fellow demons is antagonistic and hierarchical. He attacks and leaves the demon Azazel for dead after Azazel fails a mission, later requesting Lucifer to give him control of the operation. While he allies with Martinet, the relationship is one of convenience built on a lie; Martinet secretly has his own agenda and deceives Belzebuth about being able to control Bahamut. His rivalry with Lucifer is one of ambition, as he secretly plots to usurp the demon lord’s position.

Belzebuth’s development in the story follows a classic arc of hubris and downfall. For most of the series, he operates from the shadows with immense confidence, orchestrating a complex scheme that seems to unfold exactly as he planned. He successfully manipulates events to turn Amira into the Transcendent Key, unleashes Bahamut, and triumphantly declares his dominion over both gods and demons. However, his moment of victory is immediately shattered when he discovers he has no control over the ancient dragon. Instead of obeying him, Bahamut turns on Belzebuth, blasting him with its fiery breath and leaving him mortally wounded. In his dying moments, he curses Martinet for tricking him, realizing that his ambition made him a pawn in another’s game. His suffering is finally ended when Azazel arrives and kills him as revenge for his earlier betrayal.

Belzebuth possesses notable abilities that make him a formidable threat. He is a master of magical combat, primarily using his signature staff to summon and control destructive blue flames, which he wields against his opponents. He is also a powerful physical combatant, easily overpowering other high-ranking demons like Azazel when they are at full strength. His most significant ability is his advanced magical knowledge, specifically in the forbidden arts of creation and manipulation of souls, which he used to create Amira by fusing his own essence with that of an angel. His overarching ambition and scheming, while ultimately his undoing, demonstrate a significant capacity for long-term planning and manipulation on a grand scale.
