Description
German Luis is a central character in Garo the Animation, serving as a Makai Knight who holds the title of Zoro, the Shadow Cutting Knight. His background is steeped in tragedy and defined by the relentless persecution of Makai practitioners. Before the events of the story, he went by the name Roberto. He and his wife, Anna, were imprisoned in the kingdom of Valiante during a campaign to hunt down those who used Makai arts, disguised as a witch hunt. While German Luis managed to escape his cell, he arrived too late to save Anna, who was executed by burning at the stake. However, he arrived in time to save his newborn son, Leon, who was born during the execution and protected by his mother's magic. Following this trauma, he raised Leon outside the kingdom, living as fugitives while hunting Horrors and avoiding Valiante's military.
In terms of personality, German Luis presents a contradictory facade. On the surface, he is a cocky, suave, and hedonistic womanizer with a cavalier attitude toward life. He frequently indulges in wine and women, sometimes to a comical and irresponsible degree, such as once begging his son for money to pay a prostitute who turned out to be the Horror they were tracking. He often loses his clothing and finds himself in undignified situations. Despite these annoying antics, he is deeply perceptive, bold, and capable of becoming utterly serious when the situation demands it. His primary motivation is a complex mix of duty and love; he tolerates his son Leon's bitter disposition and frequent physical abuse out of love, understanding the pain Leon carries from witnessing his mother's death. While he finds his son's constant rage irritating, he remains a devoted, if unconventional, guardian.
Within the story, German Luis functions as a mentor, protector, and a narrative foil to his son. While Leon is dour, angry, and consumed by a need for vengeance, German is carefree, pragmatic, and focused on survival. He is the one who rescues the infant Leon from the flames and raises him on the road, training him as a Makai Knight. His role often involves balancing Leon's impulsiveness with his own experience, even as his seemingly irresponsible behavior creates friction between them. The character is established as a seasoned knight whose past connects deeply to the kingdom's corruption and the villain Mendoza's rise to power.
His key relationships are primarily with his family. The most significant is with his son, Leon Luis, the protagonist who inherits the Golden Knight armor, Garo. Despite Leon's resentment and harsh treatment, their bond is one of mutual need and underlying care. He is also connected to the royal family of Valiante, as his late wife Anna was the sister of Queen Esmeralda, making him the uncle of Prince Alfonso San Valiante, who later becomes a Makai Knight himself. This makes him a direct relative to the kingdom's throne.
Over the course of the story, German Luis undergoes development that reveals the serious man beneath the playboy exterior. While he initially seems like a simple deadbeat, his actions consistently prove he is a capable and cunning fighter who prioritizes his family's safety. Later story developments involve his death and subsequent temporary return from the dead to confront a new threat. This resurrection is triggered by the abduction of his other son, Roberto Luis, revealing that German had another child and was married to a woman named Ximena Luis. In this final chapter, he spearheads a counterattack against powerful Horrors, demonstrating his enduring bravery and skill until the very end.
As a Makai Knight, German Luis possesses notable abilities that distinguish him. In battle, he wields two knives that transform into larger, dagger-like weapons when he dons his armor. The Zoro armor is silver with an asymmetrical design and a tattered cape, and his signature weapons are attached to his arms with chains wound on reels, allowing him to extend and retract them for versatile attacks. His fighting style is effective and bold, befitting a knight who has survived decades of hunting Horrors while evading a kingdom's army.
