Description
Bernardo Dion is a pivotal antagonist in the story, introduced as a formidable dark knight. He was once a dedicated and by-the-book Makai Knight who held the title of Zex the Darkness Knight. In his past, he was a close friend and comrade to Germán Luís and the Makai Priestess Anna, forming a trio of companions in their youth. Beneath his formerly disciplined exterior, he harbored a deep-seated envy towards Germán, resenting his friend's carefree attitude and his romantic relationship with Anna.

The character's tragic transformation is rooted in a profound loss of faith in humanity. During the witch hunts, when Germán and Anna were captured, Bernardo was overwhelmed by the cruelty of the human soldiers. In a moment of desperate rage, he broke the most sacred law of the Makai Order by raising his sword against humans to protect his friends. He was mortally wounded in the ensuing fight and lost his left hand. On the brink of death, the sinister Makai Priest Mendoza found him and offered him a new chance at life in exchange for his servitude. Desperate and filled with a desire for revenge against those who had wronged his friends, Bernardo accepted, fully aware that this would allow him to finally fight his former friend, Germán, as a true enemy. Mendoza transformed him into a Horror-like being, replacing his lost hand with a prosthetic gauntlet that concealed a blade.

As the captain of the Black Knights, Horror-possessed soldiers, Bernardo becomes a high-ranking enforcer for Mendoza, driven by a singular motivation to settle his old score with Germán. His role in the story is that of a personal and emotional adversary for Germán, representing a fallen mirror image of what a Makai Knight can become when consumed by despair and vengeance. His key relationships are defined by his past: his envy and friendship with Germán, his unrequited feelings for Anna, and his manipulative master-servant dynamic with Mendoza. He never learned that Mendoza was responsible for Anna's execution, adding a layer of tragic irony to his servitude.

Bernardo undergoes a significant, albeit tragic, development. He transforms from an honorable, if rigid, knight into a nihilistic dark knight serving evil. However, his story concludes with a final moment of redemption. In a climactic duel with Germán, he is fatally wounded. In his dying moments, he seemingly reverts to his old self with no memory of the preceding seventeen years. He asks his former friend to find an heir for his Zex armor before he perishes, and his body dissolves, with the title of Zex dying alongside him.

As a formidable fighter, Bernardo possesses all the skills of a trained Makai Knight, specializing in sword and shield combat. After his corruption, he can summon the black armor of Zex the Darkness Knight. In this armored state, his standard sword and shield transform into a longsword and a large shield. He is also able to summon a black-armored Madō Horse, and he can combine his sword, shield, and horse into a powerful drill-like weapon. He is depicted as being incredibly powerful, capable of easily swatting aside other armored Makai Knights.
