Description
Bellri Zenam is a central figure in the Regild Century, a young man whose life changes dramatically when he encounters a mysterious mobile suit. He is a 17-year-old cadet at the Capital Guard Academy, an institution dedicated to protecting the orbital elevator known as the Capital Tower. Demonstrating remarkable aptitude from a young age, Bellri is a prodigy who skipped several grades, allowing him to become a cadet and pilot trainee earlier than his peers. He is the adoptive son of Wilmit Zenam, the strict and workaholic Operation Director of the Capital Tower, and while he does not resent her constant absence, her busy schedule is a source of occasional annoyance for him. Unbeknownst to him for much of his early life, he is the biological brother of Aida Surugan, a key member of the space pirate group Ameria, and a surviving member of the royal Rayhunton family.
In terms of personality, Bellri is often seen as cunning, smug, and cheerful, carrying himself with an air of confidence that comes from his natural talents. He is easily infatuated with attractive girls, instantly developing a crush on Aida when he first sees her, and later showing interest in Raraiya Monday after her recovery. Despite his easygoing and sometimes naive demeanor, he possesses a strong moral compass. He has a deep-seated dislike for war and conflict, preferring to fight only when absolutely necessary and attempting to disable enemy mobile suits rather than destroy them and kill their pilots. He values his autonomy greatly and chafes at being under the command of others, strongly desiring to choose his own path in life.
Bellri’s role in the story is set in motion during a zero-gravity training exercise, where the Capital Tower comes under attack by the G-Self, a highly advanced mobile suit piloted by Aida. Bellri manages to capture the G-Self using a work mobile suit, an act that draws him into a much larger conflict. He feels an inexplicable connection to both the machine and its pilot. After a series of events, including the death of Aida’s lover Cahill at Bellri’s hands, he chooses to defect from the Capital Guard alongside Aida, Raraiya, and his friend Noredo Nug, joining the pirate ship Megafauna. He becomes the primary pilot of the G-Self, a machine that only a select few can operate, and finds himself fighting against the very Capital Army he was sworn to join, all while uncovering the secrets of the Regild Century and a looming threat from space.
Key relationships profoundly shape Bellri’s journey. His relationship with Aida Surugan is the most complex and pivotal. Initially driven by a crush, his feelings are thrown into turmoil when he discovers she is his older sister, a truth that causes him significant emotional distress. He eventually accepts this reality and works to become her steadfast supporter. In contrast, he is largely indifferent to the clear affections of Noredo Nug, who follows him faithfully and is visibly jealous of his attention to Aida. Though he begins to pay more attention to her later on, he ultimately parts ways with her at the story's end. His bond with his adoptive mother, Wilmit, is also significant, as his desire to assist her was his initial motivation for joining the Capital Guard.
Throughout the narrative, Bellri undergoes considerable development. Initially, he has a somewhat naive view of the conflict, believing he might be able to return to the Capital. This perspective is shattered when he is forced to kill his own instructor, Dellensen Samatar, in battle. The incident leaves him deeply traumatized and forces him to confront the brutal realities of war. Over time, he transitions from someone swept along by circumstance to a young man who makes his own choices, resolving to stop the space war and face the threat from the Moon and beyond. He gradually awakens to his potential as a Newtype, developing heightened spatial awareness and empathic perception that aid him in combat and understanding others.
Bellri possesses a number of notable abilities. Beyond his high intelligence and academic prowess, he is an exceptionally gifted mobile suit pilot. His skills are evident early on when he uses a non-combat work mobile suit to capture the advanced G-Self. He demonstrates great physical agility and is also skilled in hand-to-hand combat, once overpowering the capable pilot Klim Nick. His piloting talent, combined with his developing Newtype abilities and the unique capabilities of the G-Self, allows him to overcome increasingly powerful foes as he fights to end the conflict and find his own path in the universe.
