TV-Series
Description
Nine, also known by his alias and real name Arata Kokonoe, is one of the two central figures of the series. He and his partner Twelve are survivors of a secret government experiment called the Athena Plan, which was designed to turn orphaned children into intellectual weapons through unethical drug trials and psychological conditioning. After escaping the facility, they adopt the mantle of the terrorist group Sphinx and carry out a series of elaborate attacks in Tokyo with the aim of exposing the truth behind the program and forcing society to acknowledge the crimes committed against them.

In terms of personality, Nine is reserved, calm, and highly analytical. He maintains a stoic demeanor even under extreme pressure, approaching their operations with cold logic and meticulous planning. He is exceptionally intelligent, with advanced skills in computing, hacking, cryptography, and strategic thinking, often comparing their schemes to a game of chess. He also has a fondness for classical literature, which reflects his thoughtful and introspective side. Despite his controlled exterior, he is driven by a deep-seated anger over the injustices he and Twelve suffered, though this anger evolves over the course of the story into a more nuanced desire for justice and protection of those he cares about.

Nine’s primary motivation is to expose the crimes of the Athena Plan and to reclaim a sense of agency that was stolen from him. His role in the story is that of the mastermind: he designs the riddles, coordinates the heists, and ensures that each act of terrorism serves a larger purpose in their pursuit of the truth. He is the quieter, more calculating half of the Sphinx duo, in contrast to Twelve’s more impulsive and emotionally expressive nature. His relationship with Twelve is foundational — they share a profound bond forged through shared trauma, and Nine feels a strong sense of responsibility for his partner’s safety. He also forms a significant connection with Lisa Mishima, an outsider who becomes entangled in their mission, and his interactions with her gradually soften his detached attitude, leading him to act protectively toward her. The detective Shibazaki also serves as a foil, challenging Nine’s worldview and forcing him to reflect on the moral weight of his actions.

Over the course of the series, Nine undergoes a notable character development. Initially driven by revenge and a desire to expose the truth, he gradually shifts toward selflessness, culminating in a sacrifice to protect Twelve during a confrontation. This change highlights his emotional growth and his willingness to put others before himself. However, the physical toll of the experimental drugs he was forced to take as a child proves fatal. He suffers severe headaches throughout the series, and in the final episode, he succumbs to the cumulative damage, though his death is portrayed symbolically rather than explicitly. His grave, marked with the number nine, is visited a year later by Lisa and Shibazaki, underscoring the lasting impact of his short but significant life.

Notable abilities include his exceptional hacking and computing proficiency, strategic planning, proficiency in disguise, and skill in deciphering complex codes. His intellectual gifts make him a formidable opponent for law enforcement and the agents sent to stop Sphinx. Despite his formidable mind, his physical health remains a vulnerability, emphasizing the fragility that underlies his composed facade.
