Description
Hime Arikawa is the protagonist of the series, a second-year student at Shimoshina High School who finds himself in an extraordinary situation due to his family's irresponsibility. His parents have accumulated a massive debt from their constant overseas travels, and they have left this financial burden in Hime's name. Facing relentless pursuit by yakuza debt collectors, who once even forced him to wear a maid outfit, Hime is rescued by the three girls of the student council. The council pays off his debt in full, but this salvation comes with a binding condition. In exchange, Hime agrees to become the student council's servant and must spend the remainder of his high school life dressed as a girl.
His personal situation at home is quite difficult, as he lives in poverty, often surviving on a diet of plain rice without any side dishes. However, after joining the student council, his living conditions improve because the council begins to support his living expenses. He also has a younger brother named Kaguya Arikawa, who is a first-year student and, like Hime, is an otokonoko, a boy who presents as a girl. Unlike Hime, Kaguya cross-dresses entirely by choice because he enjoys the attention he receives from it. Kaguya is quite possessive of his older brother and is not happy about the student council paying so much attention to Hime, preferring to keep him to himself.
In terms of personality, Hime is characterized by his normalcy, which serves as a stark contrast to the more eccentric personalities of the student council members who surround him. He is easily embarrassed and is frequently overwhelmed by the situations he is forced into, which often involve being picked on or subjected to various forms of humiliation and sexual harassment by his classmates and the council members. He is portrayed as being quite weak-willed, especially when taken advantage of, and despite his loud protests against his treatment, he is rarely listened to and is still compelled to do things he does not want to do, such as wearing specific clothes for photographs or cheering for games. His life has been full of such hardships long before his debt was paid off; he has a trauma regarding his feminine looks, and his classmates have been forcing him to dress as a girl since elementary and middle school.
Hime's primary motivation is simply survival and fulfilling his end of the bargain. At first, he cross-dresses because he has absolutely no other choice, as the student council holds his financial freedom in their hands. He does not wish to be treated as the council's dog, but his strenuous objections are generally ignored. As the narrative progresses, however, a subtle shift occurs in his motivations. He begins to show signs of slowly enjoying his forced cross-dressing, much to the delight of his brother and the student council. This development is gradual and warped by his bizarre circumstances; he finds that he is popular as a girl and begins to ask for cross-dressing tips or become excited about wearing a kimono, indicating a deep change in his outlook.
Within the story, Hime serves as the central figure around which the comedy of errors revolves. His role is to be the victim of the student council's whims, which form the basis for the series' gags. The three council members each use him for their own purposes. The vice-president, 18-kin, is a sadist who often forces him into unreasonable and humiliating situations, effectively treating him as a toy for her amusement, though she never allows actual physical harm to come to him and harbors feelings for him. Unko, the president, is intelligent and athletic but generally compliant with the group's antics. Albertina II, the secretary, is a popular manga artist who uses Hime as the basis for the title character in her magical girl manga. Outside of the council, a key relationship is with his classmate Yuma Tadokoro, who has been his friend since junior high school. While Tadokoro is easygoing, Hime also has to deal with his younger brother Kaguya, who is more confident in his cross-dressing and tries to protect or claim him from the student council.
Hime exhibits a subtle but noticeable character development. While he begins as a purely reluctant participant, the constant cross-dressing and his interactions with the council gradually begin to warp his sense of self. He becomes less resistant to his feminine presentation over time, showing moments of pride or happiness in his appearance. Though the series is largely comedic and episodic, he evolves from being a boy who is simply enduring a punishment to someone who is beginning to find a degree of acceptance, or perhaps even enjoyment, in his bizarre new high school life.
Notable abilities for Hime are not supernatural but rather physical. He possesses a naturally feminine and slender physique, with bright pink hair and bright blue eyes. His small stature and delicate features allow him to pass as a girl convincingly when he is in his school uniform, complete with a red Student Council armband, and his hair is styled with extensions into pigtails tied with red ribbons. Standing at about 158 cm tall and weighing 45 kg, he is so small that even the small size of mens clothing is too large for him, and when he wears plain mens clothes, he simply appears to be a boyish woman. This inherent physical androgyny is his most defining trait, as it is the very reason he is forced into his predicament and the source of most of the storys gags and conflicts.
