Description
Magical Ruby is a Kaleidostick, a type of magical Mystic Code created by the powerful sorcerer Kischur Zelretch Schweinorg as an application of the Second Magic. This device enables its user to transform into a magical girl by providing access to nearly limitless magical energy from the Mana Plane. Ruby was originally partnered with Rin Tohsaka, but due to Rin's constant and intense quarrels with her rival Luviagelita Edelfelt, Ruby grew tired of the situation. On one such occasion, Ruby and her sister Kaleidostick, Magical Sapphire, canceled their masters' transformations mid-air, allowing them to fall, and then flew off to find new partners. Ruby subsequently chose Illyasviel von Einzbern, an ordinary girl with no prior knowledge of magecraft, as her new master, tricking her into completing a three-step contract to become a magical girl.
In terms of personality, Magical Ruby is characterized as cheerful, mischievous, and playful, but also possesses a sadistic streak. She thoroughly enjoys teasing and annoying her user, often mocking Illya's lack of experience or her standards as a magical girl. A common subject of her teasing is Illya's crush on her adoptive brother, Shirou, with Ruby frequently providing unsolicited and manipulative advice on how to win his affection. Despite this seemingly troublesome nature, Ruby is exceptionally loyal to her master, particularly towards Illya. She has demonstrated genuine concern, such as warning Illya of the severe physical dangers involved in using her advanced Zwei form. Ruby holds a deep pride in the concept of a magical girl and despises her own creator, Zelretch.
Ruby's primary role in the story is that of a facilitator and a source of power for Illya. She is the catalyst that thrusts Illya into the world of magical combat and the mission to collect the Class Cards. Throughout the events of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya 2wei!, Ruby continues to serve as Illya's partner and weapon, providing commentary and support during battles against the newly emergent threat, including the manifestation of Illya's separated alter ego, Kuro.
The most significant relationship for Ruby is with her master, Illya. Their dynamic is a comedic but functional partnership, where Ruby provides immense power and tactical options while constantly berating and embarrassing Illya. Ruby also has a sibling relationship with Magical Sapphire, the Kaleidostick partnered with Miyu Edelfelt. Ruby can be used to fire powerful energy blasts, reinforce the user's physical parameters, and even form a mana blade durable enough to clash with legendary weapons. It also allows its user to fly and can Include or Install Class Cards, transforming to replicate the weapons and powers of Heroic Spirits. Beyond combat, Ruby has several utility functions, including the ability to transform into a wireless communication device for video chat, record and project video, and move and speak entirely on its own. It also possesses a feature called Secret Device #18, which can predict immediate future events based on probability.
