Description
Ayumu Oozora is a middle school student who finds himself caught between two opposing worlds. He is the son of Reia Oozora, a prominent and outspoken politician who campaigns vigorously for the eradication of espers, viewing them as a threat to society. Living under the roof of a public figure so adamantly against people like him forces Ayumu to hide his own secret identity as an esper.

Despite his young age, Ayumu aspires to follow in his mother's footsteps and one day become a member of Congress, a goal that stands in stark contrast to his hidden nature. This internal conflict is the core of his character; he fears disappointing his mother and being rejected by her if she were to discover his powers. To those who meet him, Ayumu often presents a laid-back and easygoing demeanor. He has a well-known distaste for the nickname Afro, which his curly hair has earned him, and has expressed a dislike for women, though this trait feels less than genuine.

Ayumu is a disciple of Roshi Yodani, a master who trains him in combat and the use of his abilities. His esper power is a form of flash precognition, which allows him to see a few seconds into the future, with some sources specifying a limit of approximately two seconds. This ability is not without its drawbacks, as the visions of the immediate future can blend and overlap with his perception of the present, leading to occasional confusion. In combat, this power makes him a formidable opponent, as he can briefly anticipate an enemy's moves, but it is not infallible. A clever adversary can overcome his precognition by launching an attack that is too fast to dodge or by acting on pure instinct, which is faster than the cognitive process of seeing and reacting to a future event.

Ayumu plays a significant role in the story when he is introduced to the protagonists, Rinka and Murasaki. He serves as a sparring partner for Rinka, who must learn to defeat his predictive abilities in order to grow stronger and face more dangerous threats. His personal life, particularly the irony of his mother’s political crusade, brings the theme of anti-esper sentiment to an emotionally resonant level, making the societal conflict of the series hit very close to home for both him and the audience.
