Description
Hojo Ujimasa is the elderly leader of the Hojo clan and the lord of the formidable Odawara Castle in the Sengoku Basara franchise. In Sengoku Basara: End of Judgement, he appears as a supporting character caught in the massive power struggles of the era. As the head of a historic clan that had seen better days, Ujimasa is portrayed as an aging daimyo deeply nostalgic for the former glory of his family. His personality is a mix of prideful posturing and physical frailty, often making grand declarations about the greatness of the Hojo name while simultaneously complaining about aches and pains or displaying moments of cowardice when faced with real danger. This contrast between his lofty ideals and his actual capabilities makes him a character who is often out of step with the younger, more dynamic warlords around him.
Ujimasa's primary motivation is the survival and restoration of the Hojo clan's prestige. Unlike many other characters driven by personal ambition to unify the country, his goals are more defensive and restorative, centered on protecting his territory and legacy. His role in the story of End of Judgement is relatively minor but significant as a representative of the old guard being swept aside by the new order. The character is shown during the invasion of Odawara by the forces of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In this critical moment, his army is nearly destroyed, and he is placed in mortal danger. His survival is only assured through outside intervention, specifically because of Tokugawa Ieyasu's rebellion against Hideyoshi, which inadvertently saves the old lord's life.
Ujimasa's key relationship is with his loyal servant, the legendary ninja Kotaro Fuma. Kotaro acts as his shadowy enforcer, undertaking missions and fighting battles that the elderly Ujimasa cannot handle himself. The loyalty of this immensely skilled shinobi is Ujimasa's greatest asset. Unlike his more famous historical counterpart who was forced to commit seppuku, the anime version of Ujimasa clings to life and his position, though he shows little significant character development throughout the series, remaining a static figure representative of fading power.
In terms of abilities, Ujimasa is not depicted as a frontline warrior in End of Judgement but rather as a commander who relies on his castle's defenses and his ninja retainers. When he does fight, his signature weapon is a large, multi-bladed spear designed to showcase the might of his clan, though he struggles with its weight. His combat style is frequently associated with the element of ice, allowing him to freeze his opponents. His most notable special ability reflects his obsession with his ancestry: he can summon the ghosts of his forefathers to fight alongside him, a manifestation of his desperate wish to reclaim the Hojo clan's former greatness.
