Description
Kuroda Kanbee is a calculating and ambitious strategist who appears as a supporting character in Sengoku Basara: End of Judgement. Formerly a trusted retainer under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he was renowned for his sharp intellect alongside the tactician Takenaka Hanbei. His rise to power came to an abrupt halt when his secret plot to seize control of the land for himself was exposed by Ishida Mitsunari, leading to his exile from the Toyotomi inner circle. As punishment, his hands are permanently locked inside a heavy iron ball-and-chain restraint, a mark of his failed rebellion that he is forced to carry wherever he goes.

His core motivation is liberation and revenge. Kanbee is fixated on obtaining the key to his shackles, which is held by Ootani Yoshitsugu, a manipulative figure who uses the promise of freedom to control him. This singular goal drives much of his behavior, pushing him to navigate the chaos of the warring states era with patience and cunning. Beneath the surface, however, he still harbors grand ambitions of conquest, unwilling to abandon his dream of rising to the top despite his humiliating position.

In terms of role in the story, Kanbee operates largely in the shadows of the central conflict between the Eastern and Western Armies. He aligns with and betrays various factions as it suits his personal quest for the key. His path repeatedly crosses with Mouri Motonari, a fellow schemer whose elaborate mind games constantly outmaneuver Kanbee, leading to a tense and grudging rivalry. When the decisive Battle of Sekigahara approaches, Kanbee rushes to the battlefield hoping to finally reclaim the key from Yoshitsugu, only to become swept up in the larger slaughter, ultimately clashing with major figures on all sides, including Tokugawa Ieyasu, Ishida Mitsunari, and Honda Tadakatsu.

Kanbee’s personality is defined by a cold, methodical pragmatism. He rarely acts on impulse and instead prefers to observe, plan, and strike when an opening presents itself. The humiliation of his restraints has instilled in him a deep reservoir of silent fury, but he channels that anger into his fighting style rather than letting it break his composure. He is not without a sense of pride; he despises being treated as a tool or a fool, and his frequent frustration with Motonari’s deceptions reveals a man struggling to reconcile his intellect with his powerlessness.

His key relationships are built on a mix of distrust and dependency. Ootani Yoshitsugu, the keeper of his literal freedom, serves as both tormentor and key to his future. Mouri Motonari, with his sun-themed theatrics and love for psychological warfare, acts as a nemesis who repeatedly dangles hope only to snatch it away. Kanbee’s connection to the remnants of Toyotomi’s forces is defined by bitterness, particularly toward Ishida Mitsunari, whom he resents for his role in his downfall. Meanwhile, his own loyal followers, the rugged miners and soldiers of the Kuroda clan, remain steadfast in their service, arming themselves with pickaxes and explosive tools rather than traditional samurai weaponry.

Regarding development, Kanbee does not undergo a dramatic philosophical transformation in this anime; instead, his arc is one of persistent struggle against his bonds. Each encounter with a rival or a battle inches him closer to acquiring the key, but his progress is often stalled by his own ambition or the machinations of others. By the end of events surrounding Sekigahara, he has confronted his jailer and tasted true combat without restraint, though his ultimate fate remains intertwined with the never-ending cycle of warfare and deception that defines his existence.

In combat, Kanbee’s most notable feature is his use of the very ball and chain that imprisons him as a devastating weapon. He swings the heavy iron mass in wide, crushing arcs, launches it forward in a powerful drop kick, and spins his body in a rolling charge that allows him to plow through enemy formations or escape encirclement. This unorthodox style makes him a slow but immensely destructive fighter, capable of controlling space and punishing anyone who underestimates the reach of his shackles. His techniques reflect a life of adapting a curse into a tool of survival, blending brute force with the strategic mind of a seasoned general.
