Description
Houjou Ujimasa is the leader of the Houjou clan and the lord of the formidable Odawara Castle, a role he carries with a conflicted sense of pride. In the Sengoku Basara: End of Judgement anime, his position is that of an aging daimyo struggling against the changing tides of a unified Japan under Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Ujimasa is portrayed as an elderly man whose personality is defined by a deep, often comical, obsession with the former glory of his clan. He constantly speaks of the greatness of the Houjou name, yet his words and actions often lack the seriousness and strength to back up his claims, leading to him being ridiculed by the more powerful forces surrounding him. This obsession with legacy is a core part of his personality; he is frequently seen invoking his ancestors, though paradoxically, he also curses them for the clan's decline. Physically, he suffers from ailments like a bad back, a recurring gag that undercuts his proclamations of might and reinforces his status as a whimpering old man in a world of youthful, hyper-powerful warriors. Despite his ineptitude in combat and his tendency to panic, he shows a cunning side, relying on his legendary ninja, Fuuma Kotarou, to do most of his fighting for him.
Motivation for Ujimasa stems from a desperate desire to survive and restore his clan’s relevance. He is a relic of a previous era who finds himself cornered by the overwhelming force of Hideyoshi’s regime. In his appearance in End of Judgement, his primary role is as a victim of Hideyoshi’s brutal campaign to subjugate all of Japan. His story begins with the siege of Odawara Castle, where his forces are nearly annihilated. He is placed in mortal danger, and his survival comes not from his own strength, but from a moment of external chaos: Tokugawa Ieyasu’s rebellion against Hideyoshi, which inadvertently saves his life. This event highlights his role as a passive figure, a piece on the board being moved by younger, more decisive warlords rather than an active agent of his own destiny.
His most significant key relationship is with his servant and protector, Fuuma Kotarou. As a silent and incredibly skilled ninja, Kotarou serves as Ujimasa’s sword and shield, often engaging in battles that the lord himself cannot fight. Ujimasa is heavily reliant on him, creating a dynamic where the talkative, boastful lord contrasts sharply with his mute, efficient vassal. Regarding other warlords, his interactions are defined by his weakness; he becomes a target for the powerful, such as Hideyoshi, and is often caught in the crossfire of larger conflicts.
Within the limited scope of End of Judgement, Ujimasa does not undergo a significant development arc. Instead, he serves as a narrative device to demonstrate the ruthlessness of Hideyoshi’s conquest and the collapse of the old order. His appearance reinforces the stakes of the story, showing that even well-established lords behind impenetrable castles are no longer safe.
Notable abilities are not a defining feature for Ujimasa in this anime adaptation, as he is rarely seen in direct combat. Drawing from his portrayal in the original games, he is associated with the ice element and wields a large, multi-bladed spear named the Houjou Glory Spear, which is paradoxically too heavy for him to wield properly. His most powerful technique, often depicted in the games, is a Basara attack that summons the ghosts of his ancestors to fight for him. However, in End of Judgement, these abilities take a back seat, emphasizing his political vulnerability and physical frailty over any personal combat prowess.
