Description
Klein, whose real name is Ryoutarou Tsuboi, is a central supporting character in Sword Art Online II. A veteran gamer trapped in the Sword Art Online death game, he is visually distinguished by a red headband and samurai-inspired attire, and he fights primarily with a katana. Klein was the very first player to befriend the protagonist Kirito on the opening day of the game. When Kirito prepared to leave the starting city to level up alone, Klein chose to stay behind to look after his own close friends who were also trapped, a decision that created a deep and enduring bond. This act of loyalty defined his character: he formed the guild Fuurinkazan, named after the concept of Wind, Forest, Fire, and Mountain, and successfully led it as a front-line guild throughout the two years of Aincrad, ensuring that every member survived the ordeal.
Klein's personality is defined by his outgoing friendliness, unshakable loyalty, and cheerful, easygoing nature. He easily gets along with others and often provides comedic relief due to his straightforwardness and his eagerness when it comes to romance. Despite this light-hearted surface, he is a highly reliable and passionate warrior on the battlefield, acting as a dependable older brother figure to Kirito and his friends. He never holds grudges and is always ready to lend a helping hand, often serving as a bridge between Kirito and the wider player community.
His primary motivations revolve around protecting his guildmates, supporting his friends on the front lines, and enjoying the camaraderie of the game. In Sword Art Online II, which takes place largely in ALfheim Online, Klein plays as a Salamander, a race attuned to fire and offensive magic. He frequently accompanies Kirito, Asuna, and their companions on difficult quests and dungeon raids, providing steady combat support with his katana skills.
Klein's development throughout the story shows his maturation from a nervous newbie into an accomplished guild leader and front-line veteran. His bond with Kirito is a defining element of his character: he respects Kirito deeply, accepts his occasional distant attitude with understanding, and has earned a place as one of the very few people Kirito trusts implicitly. His notable abilities include mastery of the Katana skill, which was a rare Unique Skill in Sword Art Online, and his tactical leadership of the Fuurinkazan guild, which consistently operated as a skilled and cohesive unit without sustaining a single casualty.
