Description
Ami Mizuno is a fourteen-year-old second-year student at Juuban Municipal Junior High School, widely recognized as the top student in Japan with an IQ reported to be around 300. She lives in a luxury apartment with her mother, Saeko, who works as a doctor, while her father, a Japanese painter, lives separately after the parents divorced. Ami dreams of following in her mother's footsteps and becoming a doctor herself, a goal that drives her intense dedication to her studies.
Before the events of the series, Ami was a very isolated and lonely individual. Her exceptional intelligence and status as an honor student made her the target of jealousy and suspicion from her peers, who found her difficult to approach, leading to a reputation as cold or uncaring. In reality, she possesses a kind, gentle, quiet, and well-mannered personality. Her life changes dramatically when she meets Usagi Tsukino. Usagi, who has an ulterior motive of getting Ami to help her study, persistently offers friendship, and Ami enthusiastically accepts, finding her loneliness alleviated by Usagi's genuine friendliness.
Ami’s primary motivation is to protect her newfound friends and use her intellect to aid in their mission. She is a fiercely loyal individual who deeply cherishes the Sailor Guardians, her first real friends, and is willing to give her own life to protect them. Her role within the Sailor Guardians is that of the strategist and the "brains" of the operation. Luna quickly recognizes her as a pillar of the team due to her enthusiasm for gathering and analyzing information. Ami is practical, careful, and often more cautious than her more impulsive companions, preferring to assess a situation before taking risks.
Her key relationships are central to her development. Her bond with Usagi is the most significant, as Usagi's acceptance helps Ami come out of her shell. She develops strong friendships with the other Inner Guardians, Rei Hino, Makoto Kino, and Minako Aino. Despite her shy nature, she sometimes joins them in teasing Usagi, showing how she becomes more comfortable and outgoing. She has a particular fondness for Makoto, with whom she is often seen spending time. While she is popular with male students and receives many love letters, she is very shy and passive regarding romance, even developing hives at the thought of dating.
Throughout the series, Ami shows significant personal development. She transitions from a timid, isolated girl who only knew the world of academics to a confident and valued member of a team. Her growth is exemplified when she gives up an opportunity to study abroad in Germany to remain with her friends and continue her duties as a Sailor Guardian. She also uses her intelligence to help her friends in non-combat ways, such as opening a study group to help them pass their high school entrance exams. Her personality also reveals a hidden four-dimensional or quirky side, as she can be oblivious to social norms and has a secret love for games and pop culture, once achieving the highest score on a Sailor V arcade game on her first try.
As Sailor Mercury, the Guardian of Water and Wisdom, Ami possesses a variety of water and ice-based abilities, many of which are strategic in nature. Her most iconic power is Mercury Aqua Mist, which creates a thick, freezing fog to blind and disorient enemies, providing cover for her allies. She is also equipped with a micro-miniature supercomputer and Mercury Goggles, a visor that allows her to scan environments, analyze enemy weaknesses, and track targets, making her an invaluable source of battlefield intelligence. As she grows stronger, she gains more offensive attacks, including Shine Aqua Illusion, which creates a powerful wave of water that can freeze targets solid, and Mercury Aqua Rhapsody, her most powerful attack performed with the Mercury Rod.
