Description
Chibi-Usa, also known as Sailor Chibi Moon, is a central character who appears from the second story arc onward. Her civilian name is Usagi Small Lady Serenity, but she is called Chibi-Usa, which means "Little Usagi," to distinguish her from her mother. She hails from the 30th century and is the only daughter of Neo-Queen Serenity and King Endymion, the future selves of Usagi Tsukino and Mamoru Chiba, making her the crown princess of the utopian future kingdom of Crystal Tokyo.
Chibi-Usa has a unique and unusual background. Although she appears to be a young child around six to ten years old, she is chronologically over 900 years old. Her physical and mental aging stalled because her powers as a Sailor Guardian had not yet awakened, a common effect of the Silver Crystal's power on the citizens of the future. This prolonged childhood is a source of great insecurity for her. Feeling like she is living in the shadow of her powerful mother and desperate to grow up, she once stole the future Silver Crystal. At that moment, the Black Moon Clan attacked Crystal Tokyo, and Neo-Queen Serenity was encased in a crystal coffin to survive. Overwhelmed with guilt and believing she caused her mother's near-death, Chibi-Usa stole a Space-Time Key from Sailor Pluto and traveled back to the 20th century to find Sailor Moon, hoping the legendary guardian could save her mother.
In terms of personality, Chibi-Usa is a complex child. When she first arrives in the past, she is often cautious, fearful, and lonely. She carries a heavy burden of guilt and is deeply insecure about her lack of power and her place in her family. This manifests as willful and sometimes bratty behavior, and she frequently bickers with her past mother, Usagi, over everything from attention to Mamoru. However, at her core, she is a kind-hearted child who yearns for family warmth and friendship. As she grows throughout the series, particularly in the Infinity arc, she becomes more cheerful, outgoing, and socially adept. She demonstrates immense tolerance, persistence, and unwavering loyalty to her friends, showing a maturity that often surpasses her apparent age.
Her primary motivation throughout the story is to save her mother, Neo-Queen Serenity, and redeem herself for her perceived mistake. In later arcs, her motivation shifts to proving herself as a Sailor Guardian in her own right. She wishes to become a brave and independent warrior like Sailor Moon and to form meaningful connections with others, a life she was largely without in the lonely Crystal Palace. Her role in the story evolves from being a questing child in need of protection to a trainee and eventually a full-fledged heroine. She serves as a deuteragonist in the Dream arc (SuperS) and a bridge between the past and future, often fighting alongside her mother and the Inner Sailor Guardians while sharing a special bond with the Outer Guardians.
Her relationships are central to her development. Her most significant bond is with her mother, Usagi, whose love she initially doubts but ultimately comes to cherish. She also has a complicated relationship with her father, Mamoru, often displaying an Electra complex that is played for comedic effect. Her first true friend is Sailor Pluto, the lonely Guardian of Time, whose sacrifice breaks Wiseman's brainwashing and awakens Chibi-Usa's powers. In the 20th century, she forms a deeply important friendship with the sickly Hotaru Tomoe, which is pivotal in the Infinity arc. She also becomes the future romantic partner of Helios, the guardian of Elysion, whom she aids in the Dream arc.
Chibi-Usa undergoes significant development. In the Black Moon arc, she is corrupted by the villain Wiseman and transformed into the evil, adult form known as Black Lady. After being saved by the love of her family and the death of her friend Sailor Pluto, she awakens as Sailor Chibi Moon for the first time. She returns to the past to train, learning to fight as a Sailor Guardian in training. By the Dream arc, she unlocks the power to become Super Sailor Chibi Moon and eventually achieves her Eternal form, gaining her very own Sailor Crystal, the Pink Moon Crystal, which is distinct from her mother's Silver Crystal.
Notable abilities include her transformation calls, which escalate from Moon Prism Power, Make Up to Moon Crisis, Make Up and finally Pink Moon Crystal Power, Make Up in the manga and Crystal anime. She possesses a variety of items, including Luna P, a magical transforming toy shaped like Luna, and the Chibi Moon Compact. Her signature attack is the deceptively weak, heart-shaped projectile called Pink Sugar Heart Attack, though her true strength lies in her healing powers, which are comparable to her mother's. She also uses the Crystal Clarion to perform Twinkle Yell, summoning her ally Pegasus (Helios). Unlike her mother, her Sailor Crystal is the Pink Moon Crystal, which she eventually uses to revive Helios and which grants her the power to lead her own guardian team, the Sailor Quartet.
