Description
Prince Diamond, known in the original Japanese version and in most written materials as Prince Demande, sometimes rendered Prince Demand, is the leader of the Black Moon Clan and the principal antagonist of the Black Moon arc in the anime Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal. He is the prince of the planet Nemesis, a dark celestial body described as the tenth planet of the Solar System, and the older brother of Saphir, called Sapphire in some English adaptations. He commands the Black Moon Clan's attack on Crystal Tokyo in the thirtieth century and later extends his campaign to the past, where he comes into direct conflict with Sailor Moon and her fellow guardians.
In terms of background, the Black Moon Clan consists of humans who broke with the order established by Neo-Queen Serenity, the future incarnation of Sailor Moon. They rejected her use of the Legendary Silver Crystal to extend human life, viewing it as a violation of the natural order, and chose to live in self-imposed exile on Nemesis. Prince Diamond's people are described as descendants of prisoners, and his original intention was reportedly to approach Neo-Queen Serenity and reason with her, explaining that his people were not criminals themselves despite their origins. Over time, however, his advisor Wiseman, later revealed to be the entity Death Phantom, manipulated him and turned his grievances into a deep resentment of Earth and Crystal Tokyo, steering him toward a plan to conquer both.
Personality-wise, Prince Diamond is proud, imperious, and ambitious, and he regards the citizens of Crystal Tokyo as corrupt because of their prolonged lifespans. He is also defined by an obsessive romantic fixation. During an attack on Crystal Tokyo he glimpsed Neo-Queen Serenity and fell in love with her, fascinated in particular by her eyes and the anger they directed at him. This obsession eventually transfers to her younger self, Sailor Moon, whom he kidnaps, dresses in Neo-Queen Serenity's garments, and attempts to claim as his own. He forces a kiss on her and tries to use the power of a third eye on his forehead to brainwash her into becoming his queen. He is shown as both dangerous and increasingly unstable, especially as he comes to understand that he has been deceived by Wiseman.
His role in the story is substantial within the Black Moon arc. He directs operations to locate Chibiusa and the Silver Crystal, arranges the abductions of several Sailor Guardians, and personally captures Sailor Moon, bringing her to the Black Moon Castle on Nemesis, where he explains his ambitions. He tells her that the Black Moon attacked Crystal Tokyo to prove that the Silver Crystal is not the only inconceivable power in the universe. He also presides over events that lead to Chibiusa's transformation into Black Lady and the brainwashing of Tuxedo Mask, although the true architect of those manipulations is Wiseman. In the final confrontation, he obtains both the Silver Crystal of the present and that of the future and attempts to bring them together, a course of action that would destroy the universe through a time paradox. Sailor Pluto halts time to stop him and sacrifices her life in the process. When Death Phantom then turns his attack on Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask, Prince Diamond shields them with his own body and dies, an act of self-sacrifice that stands in sharp contrast to his earlier conduct.
Key relationships define much of his arc. His younger brother Saphir is loyal to him and serves as a more measured counterweight, while Esmeraude, known as Emerald in some English versions, loves him unrequitedly. Wiseman is the most damaging relationship in his life, as the advisor quietly controls and ultimately ruins him. His feelings for Neo-Queen Serenity and Sailor Moon drive nearly all of his decisions, and both Tuxedo Mask and the Sailor Guardians serve as his primary opponents. Chibiusa is used as a pawn in his schemes, particularly as a means of drawing out the Silver Crystal.
In terms of notable abilities, Prince Diamond wields considerable psychic and supernatural power. His third eye is used for mental domination and hypnosis, and he demonstrates the capacity to teleport himself and others, to snatch people away from great distances, and to move objects and individuals across space. He draws strength from the Evil Black Crystal associated with Nemesis, a substance that absorbs light, and he commands the resources and technology of the Black Moon Clan. His most destructive ambition is the attempted merging of the two Silver Crystals, which would have generated a catastrophic paradox capable of ending the universe.
His development across the arc takes him from a confident, controlling conqueror to a manipulated figure who realizes too late that he was only a tool in Wiseman's scheme. The obsession that defines him also becomes the source of his undoing, and in the Crystal version of the story his death is portrayed as a redemptive choice, as he gives his life to protect Sailor Moon from the very force that had been using him.
