Description
Jamie Hazaford is a central character in the anime Argevollen, where she begins her journey as a civilian engineer. She works for the Kybernes Manufacturing Company and was initially tasked with the transport and programming maintenance of the advanced Trail Krieger known as the Argevollen. Her life takes a dramatic turn when the convoy she is traveling with is ambushed by soldiers from the Ingelmian forces, an attack that results in the deaths of all her companions. She is rescued by the Arandas Army's 8th Independent Unit, an event that permanently ties her fate to the military.
In terms of personality, Jamie initially presents as anxious and uptight, a demeanor likely shaped by the traumatic attack she survived. She has a notable short temper and can be strict with others, which is humorously demonstrated when she hits the protagonist, Tokimune Susumu, shortly after he saves her life. Despite her nervous disposition, she possesses a core of bravery and is shown to be caring and kind, especially when working to support the people around her. Visually, she is depicted as a young woman with blonde hair and green eyes.
Her primary motivation after the attack is to return to her normal life and her old department at Kybernes Manufacturing. However, this wish is denied when she is given official instructions to remain with the 8th Independent Unit. The reason for this order is that she has become indispensable to the war effort; her engineering expertise and security credentials effectively make her the activation key for the Argevollen. This revelation forces her to accept a new role as the mecha's on-site engineer, making her responsible for its performance, data analysis, and synchronization levels directly on the battlefield.
Her role in the story is therefore intrinsically linked to the Argevollen itself and its pilot, Tokimune Susumu. As the engineer in charge, she is the primary support staff for the unit, monitoring the machine's systems and working to unlock its full potential. Her relationship with Tokimune is central to her development, as she must learn to trust him with the prototype she helped manage while he comes to rely on her technical skills. She is also formally assigned to the Arandas Army's 8th Independent Unit, making her a non-combatant but essential member of a team that includes experienced officers like Captain Ukyo Samonji. Her professional delight at seeing the Argevollen's performance improve, such as when the pilot's synchronization rate increases, highlights her dedication to her work and the machine.
Throughout the series, Jamie undergoes significant development as she transitions from a terrified survivor to a capable and integrated member of a military unit. While she never becomes a soldier, she finds her place on the front lines, using her technical knowledge to aid the 8th Independent Unit's missions. Her notable abilities lie entirely in the field of engineering, specifically in the programming, maintenance, and operational management of the highly complex and unique Argevollen. It is her technical skill and her status as the machine's key operator that define her contribution to the war.
