Description
Kakeru Okikura is an eighteen-year-old transfer student who arrives in the seaside town of Hinodehama during the summer break of his third year of high school. He is the son of a famous pianist, Miwako Okikura, and an architect, Toshihiro Okikura. Due to his mother's career, Kakeru spent his childhood moving frequently from place to place, a rootless upbringing that prevented him from forming deep, lasting connections with peers and led to a solitary and introverted nature. At the start of the story, he moves to his father's hometown to live with him, seeking a sense of belonging in a place that feels like a true home.

In appearance, Kakeru is noted for his striking deep blue eyes and black hair with bangs swept to the left. He is often seen wearing a short-sleeved blue shirt and laced boots, and his demeanor is frequently described as mysterious, calm, and aloof. He is a quick thinker who can be direct to the point of insensitivity, and his unique lifestyle, including a daily routine of hiking alone in the mountains and his choice not to own a cell phone, further sets him apart from his peers. Communication with him is primarily through his home's landline.

Kakeru’s most defining characteristic is a special ability he calls fragments of the future, which allows him to see and hear events that are yet to come. This power is intimately connected to his mother's piano music, which serves as the medium through which he perceives these fragments. Crucially, every voice he has ever heard from the future belongs to a single person: a local girl named Touko Fukami. This mysterious link is what draws him to her after he transfers to her school. When Touko is near him, their shared ability intensifies, making the fragments clearer and more frequent.

His role in the story is that of a catalyst, whose arrival disrupts the delicate emotional balance of a long-standing group of five friends, particularly due to his immediate and unique connection with Touko. His primary relationship is with Touko, for whom he develops sincere and deepening feelings. This creates a significant source of tension with Yukinari Imi, a close friend of Touko who secretly harbors his own feelings for her. Kakeru’s rivalry with Yukinari is pronounced; he addresses others by their first names but always refers to Yukinari by his full name, which can be seen as a form of provocation. Their conflict leads to a confrontation where Yanagi Takayama, who loves Yukinari, slaps Kakeru in defense of the group's harmony.

Throughout the summer, Kakeru’s personality shows signs of development as he begins to open up to Touko and question his own nature. The experiences he shares with her lead him to doubt the validity of his fragments of the future, and over time, he stops hearing the voices altogether. Despite growing closer to the group, his journey ends ambiguously. At the conclusion of summer break, Kakeru mysteriously disappears from the lives of his new friends. His departure is unexplained, leaving behind unanswered questions and theories that range from him moving abroad with his mother to the possibility that he was never truly there.
