Description
Isami Kondō is the charismatic and imposing leader of the Shinsengumi in Samurai Jam -Bakumatsu Rock-. He stands as a central figure whose unwavering belief in the power of music shapes the group's direction and philosophy. Hailing from Musashi in Tokyo, Kondō possesses a large, commanding physical presence, standing at 190 centimeters tall, which complements his naturally magnetic personality.

His personality is defined by an infectious passion for performance and an unshakable conviction that music can bring peace to the world. Kondō is a self-proclaimed number one fan of the Shinsengumi, a perfectionist who constantly seeks to elevate the quality of their shows. This drive is balanced by a warm, accessible nature, highlighted by his legendary idol smile, which he uses to captivate audiences and allies alike. His dedication to his craft and his men is absolute, fostering deep loyalty within the group.

Kondō’s background is rooted in tradition before his rise to stardom. Originally the successor of the Tennen Rishin-ryū style of swordsmanship while serving the shogunate, his path changed dramatically when he was discovered by the great elder Naosuke Ii. Under Ii’s guidance, Kondō debuted as the leader of a dance performance unit known as the Mibu-gumi. He later expanded and transformed this group into the legendary Shinsengumi, where he earned fame as Isami of the Superlative Middle Sound for his powerful singing voice.

In the story, Kondō operates as the producer and driving force behind the Shinsengumi, often working behind the scenes to refine their performances. He holds a profound, protective relationship with Sōji Okita, regarding him with deep affection. When he realizes that Okita is being manipulated by a curse from Naosuke Ii, Kondō takes decisive action. Using his own singing voice, he attempts to purify Okita, activating his Piece Soul in the process. In a final, heroic act, Kondō absorbs all the corruption afflicting Okita into his own body, sacrificing his life to save his comrade. At this moment of death, his Piece Soul is passed on to his close associate, Hijikata Toshizō, ensuring his spirit endures within the Shinsengumi. His key relationships are thus centered on his mentorship of Okita, his profound bond with Hijikata, and his respectful recognition of Naosuke Ii as the one who launched his career.

Kondō’s notable abilities extend beyond his leadership and combat skills in Tennen Rishin-ryū. His primary power lies in his musical talent; he is a gifted singer whose voice is strong enough to convey his beliefs and even purify curses. His famous idol smile is described as a captivating ability in its own right. Furthermore, he possesses the unique capacity to channel his Piece Soul, an idol soul, to protect those he cares about, even at the cost of his own life. Outside of his duties, Kondō enjoys watching live dance performances, has a fondness for onigiri rice balls, and notably dislikes shrimp.
