TV-Series
Description
Goro Sasabe is a supporting character in the Free! series who serves as a coach and mentor figure to the main cast. He stands 170 centimeters tall and weighs 70 kilograms, with vermillion eyes and short blond hair styled into a fade cut. A distinctive star shape is shaved into the hair on the left side of his head, and he sports a pencil mustache and goatee along with two pierced earrings in his left ear.
Sasabe is an alumnus of Iwatobi High School and was once a member of its swim club. After graduating, he became the coach at the community-based Iwatobi Swimming Club, where Haruka Nanase, Makoto Tachibana, Nagisa Hazuki, and Rin Matsuoka trained together as children. When that original club was eventually disbanded and demolished, Sasabe took a part-time job as a pizza deliveryman to make a living. Despite this career change, his connection to swimming and to the young athletes he once coached never truly faded.
In terms of personality, Sasabe comes across as a kind and friendly individual who gets along well with his students and understands them deeply. He is generally content and easygoing, seeming at peace even with his work delivering pizzas. However, beneath this relaxed exterior lies a passionate and demanding coach. When he returns to guiding young swimmers, he reveals a very tough and strict side that earned him the nickname Goro the Demon. He pushes his students to practice hard, carefully analyzes their form, kick technique, and times, and sometimes grows exasperated when he feels they do not understand what they are doing. He is also resourceful, setting up recording equipment at the pool so swimmers can review and correct their form from multiple angles, a method that proves highly effective.
Sasabe's primary motivation throughout the story is his enduring love for coaching swimming and his desire to support the next generation of athletes. Even while working a low-paying delivery job, he agrees to coach the Iwatobi High School Swim Club without receiving any wage, driven purely by his enthusiasm for their relay competition and his belief in their potential. His dedication is most powerfully demonstrated when he sells his grandfather's old squid fishing boat to raise funds. He uses this money to rebuild the defunct swimming club from his childhood, reopening it under the name Iwatobi SC RETURNS, allowing the boys a place to practice and compete.
His role in the story is that of a supportive mentor and an anchor to the characters' shared past. He represents the adult who chose a practical path but never abandoned his dream, ultimately finding a way to merge the two. The former swim club members frequently summon him, often by ordering pizza, and he reliably appears to offer guidance, drive his boat for their excursions, or cheer them on at competitions. He occasionally coaches the Iwatobi High School Swim Club and continues to support its members in their swimming endeavors.
Key relationships include his bonds with the former students he coached in elementary school: Haruka, Makoto, Nagisa, and Rin. He knows them very well and becomes a trusted adult they seek out for advice and assistance. He also shares a unique connection with the teacher Miho Amakata, having discovered that she once worked as a swimsuit model under the name Marin. Sasabe was a big fan of hers during his own student days, a secret Miho silently pressures him to keep.
Over the course of the narrative, Sasabe undergoes notable development. He transitions from a former coach working an unrelated job to a man who reclaims his true calling. By selling his family's boat to reopen the swimming club, he moves from a passive role as a helpful observer to an active owner-coach fully invested in the future of the sport within his community. His abilities stem from his experience in educational and sports guidance, as well as his practical skills, including holding a license to operate a boat. He possesses a sharp eye for technical flaws in swimming form and knows how to train young athletes effectively, making him an invaluable asset to the team despite his humble circumstances.
