Description
Mayura Daidouji is the main human protagonist of the anime, a sixteen-year-old high school student with long pink hair and red eyes. She lives with her father, a Shinto priest, having lost her mother to illness when she was younger. Her fascination with mysteries began after her mother gave her a book titled Detective Nyanko, and she later becomes the enthusiastic president of her school’s Mystery Club. Driven by an intense, almost manic love for the strange and unknown, she stumbles upon the Enjaku Detective Agency while chasing a talking doll and a black cat. There she meets Loki, a childlike detective who is actually a Norse god exiled to the human world, though Mayura remains completely unaware of his true nature. She insists on becoming his assistant and visits the agency daily, hoping to involve herself in real-life mysteries.
Mayura’s personality is bright and energetic, often exclaiming “Fushigi mystery!” in her excitement. She has a strong sense of curiosity but lacks any sixth sense or supernatural awareness, which prevents her from perceiving the gods and spirits around her. Despite her eagerness, she frequently gets in the way during investigations or falls asleep at crucial moments, leading Loki to regard her as a burden; nevertheless, he occasionally admits that she can be useful. Her unwavering optimism and determination occasionally provide important emotional support, and she develops a deep bond with Loki over time. By the end of the anime, she shows romantic feelings for him, considering him a very important person, a sentiment that is more ambiguous in the manga where she only knows him as a child.
In terms of abilities, Mayura possesses no magical or combat skills. Her value lies in her persistence, her ability to interact with ordinary humans, and her sheer enthusiasm, which sometimes leads to accidental breakthroughs in cases. She is also noted by the god Freyr, who calls her his “Yamato Nadeshiko” and shows a strong romantic interest in her, though she does not reciprocate. Her role in the story is that of the human anchor and point of view character, bridging the mundane world and the hidden realm of Norse mythology. Her development centers on growing from a naive mystery enthusiast into someone who cherishes her relationships and understands that some mysteries, such as Loki’s identity, are better left unsolved. Her love of ramen and her habit of hanging around the agency define her everyday presence in the series.
