Description
Hannah Anafeloz is a character introduced in the second season of the anime Black Butler, serving as the sole maid of the Trancy household. Beneath her subservient demeanor lies a powerful demon, a fact initially hidden from her master, Alois Trancy. Her outward appearance is that of a melancholic beauty with a reserved demeanor, often seen with her head bowed and avoiding direct eye contact. She has light blue-purple hair worn in a long braid, tanned skin, and is typically dressed in a distinctive purple maid outfit. Her left eye is hidden beneath an eyepatch.

Hannah's personality is a study in contradictions, defined by her profound loyalty and capacity for enduring suffering. She is almost pathologically submissive to her master, Alois, tolerating his cruel and capricious abuse without complaint or resistance. This includes physical beatings and having her eye injured simply for looking at him. She appears timid and nervous in his presence, sometimes trembling with fear. However, this submissive facade conceals a confident and even mocking nature, which emerges when she faces other powerful beings like the demon butler Sebastian Michaelis, revealing a pride and competence typical of an ancient demon.

Her central motivation is an overwhelming desire to bring happiness to Alois, a goal she pursues despite the constant mistreatment she receives. This inexplicable devotion has its roots in her past. Before coming to the Trancy estate, Hannah was an apathetic demon who had grown bored with consuming human souls. Her existence changed when she formed a contract with a young, innocent boy named Luka Macken, who wished for his brother Jim's (the boy who would later become Alois) happiness. Luka's pure love for his brother and his gratitude toward Hannah, even as she prepared to devour his soul, moved her in a way no human ever had. She consumed Luka's soul but retained it within herself, and with it, she adopted his desire to protect and bring joy to his brother. Her service to Alois is a direct consequence of this, making her loyalty an extension of Luka's own final wish.

Within the story, Hannah plays a crucial and enigmatic role. She is the one who originally destroyed the village where the Macken brothers lived, fulfilling Luka's contract. Afterward, she arrives at the Trancy manor as a maid, placing herself and her three demon subordinates, Thompson, Timber, and Canterbury, under the authority of Alois and his butler, Claude Faustus, all to remain close to Alois. Her key relationships are complex. With Alois, it is a dynamic of abuser and abused, yet she secretly works to fulfill his deepest needs. Her relationship with Claude Faustus is that of a colleague, though she serves under him and their objectives often conflict regarding the fate of Alois and another earl, Ciel Phantomhive. Her relationship with the memory of Luka Macken is the most significant, as his absorbed soul is the true driver of all her actions.

Hannah undergoes a quiet but profound development. While she remains a demon capable of cruelty and detached from most human lives, her encounter with Luka awakens within her the capacity for genuine emotion, including love and sorrow. This culminates in her final act of love for Alois: she makes a contract with him to fulfill his true wish, creating a labyrinth from the depths of his heart and ultimately offering him and Luka a place to rest together within her for eternity.

In terms of abilities, Hannah possesses all the standard powers of a demon, including superhuman strength, speed, and regeneration. Her unique and most notable power is her role as a living sheath. Inside her body, she stores the demonic sword Laevateinn, which can be drawn by someone reaching down her throat. This weapon is said to inflict wounds that never heal. She also has the ability to store other things within her body, such as Alois's left eyeball, and is capable of absorbing and containing human souls.
