TV-Series
Description
Yakumo Oomori, more widely known by his aliases Jason or Yamori, is a major antagonist from the Tokyo Ghoul series. He is an exceptionally tall and imposing ghoul, standing 186 centimeters tall with a muscular build. His most recognizable feature is the hockey mask he wears, a direct visual reference to the famous slasher film character Jason Voorhees, from which he draws his nickname. Originating from the 13th Ward, his appearance includes sharp, lizard-like eyes and a head of white hair, though this hair color was not natural; it turned white as a physical manifestation of the extreme stress and brutal torture he endured while in captivity at Cochlea, the CCG's ghoul detention facility.
Before his descent into madness, Oomori was described as a gentle child. The trajectory of his life changed irrevocably following the death of his mother, after which he began a life of crime. His capture by the Commission of Ghoul Countermeasures led to his imprisonment in Cochlea, where he was subjected to horrific and prolonged torture at the hands of an investigator named Goumasa Tokage. To survive this psychological and physical breaking, Oomori dissociated from his reality, eventually convincing himself that he was the torturer rather than the victim. After he managed to kill his tormentor and escape, his psyche was permanently shattered, and he was reborn as a sadist who sought to inflict the same pain he experienced on others. This cemented his transformation into the monster known as Jason.
In terms of personality, Oomori is the embodiment of cruelty and sadism. He does not merely kill to feed; he derives genuine, profound pleasure from inflicting pain, collecting torture devices, and reveling in the screams and anguished expressions of his victims. He is manipulative, deceitful, and will use extreme violence to achieve his desires, which has made him a figure of immense fear among both humans and fellow ghouls. A notable habitual tic is his tendency to snap his index finger with his thumb, a mannerism he unconsciously copied from his former torturer. Despite this monstrous exterior, rare moments of vulnerability surface when he is under extreme pressure, revealing a more timid and frightened individual beneath the bravado. In his final moments, he is seen calling out for his mother, suggesting a regression to a traumatized child state.
His motivations are rooted in a cycle of violence; he seeks to dominate and break others to assert his own twisted sense of power and superiority. As a high-ranking executive of the Aogiri Tree, an organization of ghouls seeking to overthrow the CCG and dominate humanity, he believes in the inherent superiority of ghouls and acts on that belief with extreme prejudice. His cannibalization of other ghouls is not merely for sustenance but a method to grow more powerful, which allowed him to awaken a half-kakuja, a mutated and more powerful form of his kagune that grants him armor and immense strength at the cost of his sanity.
His central role in the story is as the architect of Ken Kaneki's psychological rebirth. After capturing Kaneki, Oomori tortures him for ten days, employing brutal methods such as repeatedly severing his fingers and toes with pliers, forcing them to regenerate, and inserting a centipede into his ear canal to cause unspeakable agony. To ensure Kaneki remained conscious and felt every moment of pain, Oomori forced him to count backward from one thousand by subtracting seven each time. This crucible of suffering directly leads to Kaneki accepting his ghoul nature, his hair turning white from stress, and his transformation into a far more ruthless and powerful figure. Upon breaking free, Kaneki turns the tables, beating Oomori and then torturing him before devouring part of his kagune, effectively absorbing his power and legacy.
Regarding his abilities, Oomori is classified as an S-rated ghoul, denoting his high level of threat. He possesses a rinkaku-type kagune, which manifests as several scale-like, sharp tentacles. In his advanced half-kakuja form, this kagune grotesquely covers his entire right arm and head, providing him with a powerful suit of biological armor and significantly enhanced striking power and durability. His strength is considerable, as he has repeatedly engaged in cannibalism, a practice that increases a ghoul's RC factor and mutates their abilities beyond normal limits. This makes him a devastating close-quarters combatant.
Despite his isolated and sadistic nature, Oomori maintains a few key relationships that provide depth to his character. He shares a close bond with a subordinate ghoul named Naki, who reveres him almost frantically as God Brother. Oomori, in turn, shows a rare and genuine concern for Naki, having taken him under his wing and trained him in their violent way of life. He also has a friendly rapport with Nico, a fellow ghoul, with whom he occasionally shows a wistful or regretful side, confiding uncertainties about his existence. His most significant relationship, however, is with Kaneki, who becomes his successor in a dark and twisted way. Kaneki inherits not only Oomori's signature finger-snapping habit but also his ruthless philosophy and some of his combat techniques, ensuring that the legacy of Jason continues to influence the world long after his death. Ultimately, after being left to die by Kaneki, he is finally killed by the CCG investigator Juuzou Suzuya, who uses a quinque made from Oomori's own kagune, named 13's Jason.
