ONA
Description
Makoto Kino is introduced in Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal as a transfer student at Juuban Junior High School. She is noticeably taller and physically stronger than most girls her age, which initially gives her a reputation as a delinquent. In reality, Makoto lost both of her parents in an airplane accident when she was very young, and she has been living alone and taking care of herself ever since. This early hardship forced her to become highly self-reliant and independent, but it also left her with a deep sense of loneliness that she rarely shows.

Her personality is defined by a clear dual nature. Outwardly, she appears tough and intimidating, often rumored to have been expelled from her previous school for fighting. She possesses superhuman strength and is a skilled martial artist, able to overpower grown men with ease. Yet beneath this exterior, Makoto is remarkably gentle, kind, and nurturing. She enjoys traditionally feminine hobbies such as cooking, baking, gardening, and handicrafts. She dreams of one day getting married and owning a shop that sells both flowers and cakes. Her domestic talents are, in part, a deliberate effort to balance her tomboyish traits and to create a warm home environment for herself.

Makoto’s primary motivation is to protect the people she cares about. She is fiercely loyal and often acts as a protective older sister figure within the group of Sailor Guardians. She also yearns for love and companionship, a desire that stems from her solitary upbringing. Throughout the series, she is shown to be very romantic, and she tends to compare potential love interests to a former upperclassman from her past, which sometimes drives her actions.

As the reincarnation of Sailor Jupiter, Makoto is the fourth Sailor Guardian awakened in the story. She is known as the Guardian of Protection and wields powers over lightning, thunder, and plants. Her element is wood, reflecting the Japanese name for Jupiter, but her attacks primarily manifest as electricity in reference to the Roman god Jupiter. In battle, she uses her raw physical strength combined with a range of electrical techniques, including Supreme Thunder, which calls down a bolt of lightning, and Sparkling Wide Pressure, which unleashes a sphere of electric energy. She also uses the Flower Hurricane, a gust of sharp petals that can confuse or immobilize enemies. Over the course of the series, she gains the Jupiter Crystal, allowing her to transform into Super Sailor Jupiter and later Eternal Sailor Jupiter, which enhance her existing abilities.

Makoto’s role in the story is that of a steadfast protector and a source of emotional support for the other Guardians. Her relationship with Usagi Tsukino is particularly central; Usagi was the first person to see past Makoto’s intimidating exterior and accept her for who she is, and the two become close friends. Makoto also shares a strong bond with Ami Mizuno and Minako Aino, and she often provides comfort and practical advice. In the Crystal adaptation, a past-life romantic connection between Sailor Jupiter and Nephrite, one of the Four Kings of Heaven, is depicted, adding depth to her history.

Character development for Makoto comes gradually. She learns to trust her friends and rely on them, moving away from her initial extreme self-sufficiency. Her confidence grows as she embraces both her strength and her gentle nature, and she becomes more comfortable expressing her vulnerabilities. She also matures in her approach to romance, learning to value genuine connections over idealized memories.

Notable abilities include her superhuman strength, which allows her to lift heavy objects and overpower opponents in hand-to-hand combat even without transforming. She is also a capable cook and gardener, and her rose-shaped earrings, which she wears at all times, can be used as projectile weapons. As Sailor Jupiter, she is one of the physically strongest members of the team and a key combatant in battles against the Dark Kingdom, the Black Moon Clan, and other threats.
