Queen Beryl is the main antagonist of the first story arc of the anime Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal, which closely follows the original manga. She is the queen of the Dark Kingdom, a dark realm beneath the Earth, and the servant of the malevolent entity Queen Metalia. Her name is taken from the mineral beryl. In appearance she is a tall woman with long, wavy red hair and red eyes, and she wears a sleeveless purple dress, red high heels, a black tiara, and armored accents that reflect her commanding authority.

During the age of the Silver Millennium, Beryl lived on Earth as a sorceress and fell in love with Prince Endymion. Her love was unrequited, because Endymion loved Princess Serenity of the Moon Kingdom. Overcome by jealousy and hatred toward the Moon, Beryl was drawn into the Dark Kingdom, where she encountered Queen Metalia. Metalia corrupted and empowered her, and Beryl used that power to turn the people of Earth against the Moon Kingdom, starting a war. During that conflict she killed Prince Endymion while he protected Princess Serenity, and Serenity later took her own life. Beryl was then slain by Sailor Venus with a holy sword, while Queen Serenity sealed Metalia away and sent all those involved to be reborn in the modern era.

In the present day of the story, Beryl rules the Dark Kingdom and works to obtain the Legendary Silver Crystal, the powerful artifact that would allow her to establish the Dark Kingdom on Earth. She intends to keep the crystal for herself rather than surrender its power to Metalia. Her personality is ruthless, imperious, and calculating. She treats her subordinates as expendable and disposes of those who fail her, while directing events from her throne. Beneath this ambition lies her original motivation: an obsessive, unrequited love for Endymion and envy of Princess Serenity. In this version of the story she is portrayed in a more tragic light, with her cruelty rooted in loneliness and wounded pride, and she even experiences a fleeting moment of regret near the end of her life.

Within the story, Beryl is the force behind the attacks on modern Tokyo. She sends her four generals, Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite, to gather human energy, locate the reincarnated Moon Princess, and find the Silver Crystal. As her subordinates fail, she punishes them harshly and eventually takes more direct action. She captures and controls Mamoru Chiba, the reincarnation of Prince Endymion, bending his will to the Dark Kingdom and using him as a weapon against Sailor Moon. Her rivalry with Sailor Moon, the reincarnation of Princess Serenity, is both a struggle for the crystal and a continuation of their past conflict over Endymion. Over the course of the arc, Beryl moves from manipulating events from the shadows to confronting her enemies directly, and her growing desperation drives her to rely more heavily on Metalia.

Beryl possesses considerable magical ability. She can generate and project dark energy, move objects with her mind, summon monsters from the darkness, and wield her long red hair as a weapon. Much of her power is also used to channel the life energy harvested by her servants into Queen Metalia to sustain the entity. In the final confrontation she absorbs further power from Metalia, but this dependence ultimately consumes her. She is struck down by Sailor Venus, and as she dies she speaks Endymion's name, revealing that she had always simply watched over him from afar. Queen Metalia, which had taken her power, is then destroyed by Sailor Moon using the strength of the Silver Crystal.
