TV-Series
Description
Emiru Hazaki is a central figure in the narrative, initially introduced as a contracted cleaner at Kukunochi Academy, performing various chores for a living. Despite being the same age as the students around her, she endures a harsh existence defined by poverty and strenuous physical labor. Her circumstances present a stark contrast to her peers, marking her as someone on the fringes of the school society. Her life takes a significant turn when she is selected to join the special investigation unit known as Gargouille, which operates within the mysterious and dangerous Lightless Realm. This selection offers her a chance to escape her difficult life, and she officially transfers to the academy as a student and operative.

Outwardly, Emiru projects a cheerful and sociable demeanor, often appearing eager and lively in her interactions. She is known to be flirtatious and seeks attention, particularly displaying a strong and persistent interest in her classmate, Akashi Saginuma. This behavior, however, masks deep psychological scars and a profound inferiority complex rooted in a traumatic past. Her cheerful facade is often a cover for the pain and insecurity she feels, especially regarding a terrible secret she harbors.

Emiru's motivations are heavily influenced by her past and her physical condition. She lost her parents in an accident within the Lightless Realm when she was very young, after which she was taken in by relatives. These relatives were uninterested in her well-being and only sought to claim life insurance and special disaster payments, leading to a loveless and neglectful upbringing. Due to this mistreatment, she ran away from home at an early age and was forced to work to survive. Joining the investigation team represents not only a financial reprieve but also a desperate attempt to change her fate and gain a sense of belonging and worth. Her interest in Akashi is partly because she recognizes a shared trauma; like her, he lost family in the Lightless Realm. She hopes for a connection based on this mutual understanding.

Emiru's role in the story is defined by a tragic transformation. She suffers from a condition known as crystallization, where a black metal-like tumor grows on her body as a result of exposure to the Lightless Realm. This condition causes her to emit an odor that makes her repulsive to others, particularly to Akashi, who coldly rejects her advances. The deterioration of her physical state is a central plot point. Her condition worsens dramatically during a training exercise, leading to the manifestation of a dangerous entity called an Admonition. This event exposes her secret and leads to her being detained. In a desperate act, as her body reaches its limit, Emiru makes a profound sacrifice. She consents to becoming the core consciousness, or LIM, for the Argent Unit known as Sable, effectively dying as a human to become the soul of the machine.

Her key relationships are marked by extreme contrast. Her unrequited pursuit of Akashi Saginuma is driven by their shared tragedy, but his rejection intensifies her isolation. Conversely, she becomes the object of obsessive and unwanted attention from another team member, Heito Isaku, whose high synchronization rate with her leads to them being forced to partner together, causing her further despair. These relationships underscore her loneliness and her inability to find the acceptance she craves.

Emiru's development is one of a struggle for survival and connection that ends in self-sacrifice. Originally a girl seeking to improve her lot in life, she is gradually stripped of her agency due to her deteriorating body. However, her final choice to become a LIM transforms her from a passive victim into an active contributor. As the living core of the Sable unit, she loses her physical form but gains an intangible presence, continuing to influence the world and her former comrades from within the machine. Her voice and will persist, driving the narrative forward and providing a unique form of aid in the battle against the threats of the Lightless Realm. Her notable abilities include piloting a Versvein mecha during her time in the investigation unit, but her most significant trait is her capacity to survive as a LIM, integrating her consciousness with a powerful weapon to achieve what she could not as a human.
