Description
Isaac Westcott is a central antagonist introduced in Date A Live II, serving as the managing director of Deus Ex Machina Industries, or DEM, a powerful corporation that develops technology to combat Spirits. His full name is Isaac Ray Pelham Westcott, and he is sometimes called Ike by his childhood acquaintances. Physically, Westcott is described as a tall man with a sharp, knife-like gaze and dark ash blond hair. While his appearance suggests he is around thirty years old, his actual age is significantly greater, as he has used magic-based Realizer technology to manipulate his metabolism and maintain a youthful appearance. This discrepancy is supported by his long history with other characters and his foundational role in events that occurred decades before the main story.
The foundation of Westcott's personality is a profound and deeply ingrained sadism, coupled with a complete absence of empathy or moral restraint. From childhood, he displayed a morbid fascination with death and suffering, experiencing a sense of pleasure from the sorrow of others, such as when he observed the mournful faces at his own mother's funeral. He learned to suppress these impulses to function within his community. However, this social restraint was shattered when the village of mages where he grew up was destroyed by ordinary humans who feared their power. This event grieved his companions, but for Westcott, it was a liberation, providing him with a justification to discard all pretense of humanity. He appears to be driven not by a simple need for revenge but by a deeper, more deranged desire to inflict despair and witness the collapse of the current world order. He is a manipulative individual who views almost everyone as tools, including his own subordinates, whom he is willing to sacrifice or torture without a second thought. Despite this cruelty, he often presents a calm, polite, and sophisticated facade, which makes his sudden acts of brutality all the more chilling. His primary motivation is to eradicate the existing human race and reshape the world according to his own vision.
Westcott's role in the story is that of a hidden puppet master, orchestrating many of the conflicts from the shadows. He is largely responsible for the existence of the Spirits, having been one of the key individuals who, along with Elliot Woodman and Ellen Mira Mathers, conducted the ritual that created the First Spirit approximately thirty years before the events of the series. This event also triggered the first catastrophic Spacequake that devastated Eurasia. Following a schism, his former friend Woodman left DEM to found Ratatoskr, an organization dedicated to saving Spirits, while Westcott remained at the head of DEM, dedicated to harnessing their powers for his own ends. He first appears in Date A Live II by using his political influence to reduce the military punishment of Origami Tobiichi, seeing potential in her skills. His primary goal regarding the Spirits is to force them into their Inverse Forms, a corrupted and unstable state. Once a Spirit has inverted, he extracts the Qlipha Crystal from their body, which allows him to bond with it and wield a Demon King—a corrupted counterpart to a Spirit's Angel. He demonstrates his cruelty in this season by being directly responsible for the transformation of Tohka Yatogami into Dark Tohka, viewing it as a necessary experiment. His ultimate ambition is to collect these powers to achieve his final, undisclosed wish for a new world.
His key relationships are defined by utility and shared history. His most loyal subordinate is Ellen Mira Mathers, the world's strongest Wizard, who serves as his secretary, bodyguard, and enforcer. Their bond dates back to childhood, as she was a survivor of the same destroyed village, and she remains fiercely devoted to executing his orders. In contrast, his relationship with Elliot Baldwin Woodman, the founder of Ratatoskr, is one of former friendship turned into bitter opposition. Westcott views Woodman's decision to protect Spirits as a betrayal, though he has occasionally expressed a desire for him to return to DEM, as if seeing Woodman's actions as a childish rebellion rather than a legitimate moral stance.
Throughout the series, Westcott undergoes significant development, transitioning from a behind-the-scenes schemer to a direct and formidable threat. For much of the story, he relies on his intellect and DEM's resources. His true evolution begins once he successfully extracts an incomplete Qlipha Crystal from the Spirit Nia Honjo, allowing him to wield the Demon King Beelzebub. This book-shaped weapon grants him vast omniscience, allowing him to instantly access any information he desires and share it with others. It can also summon shadowy creatures to fight for him and even trap targets within fabricated worlds. Despite being imperfect due to the incomplete extraction, this power makes him one of the most dangerous beings in the world, capable of matching even legendary Wizards in combat. As he acquires more power, he becomes less of a distant CEO and more of an active, direct adversary to Shido Itsuka and the Spirits, moving closer to realizing his catastrophic goal for the world.
