Description
Nanana Ryūgajō is the ghost of a teenage girl who was murdered ten years before the story begins. In life, she was a founding member of the Great 7, a group of exceptionally gifted students who created the artificial Nanae Island as a place where anyone could pursue their dreams. She was a renowned adventurer who traveled the world collecting ancient artifacts with mysterious powers, known as the Nanana Collection. After her death, these treasures were hidden across the island, sparking a treasure hunt that draws numerous characters into conflict. Nanana now exists as a bound spirit, confined to the apartment room where she was killed, unable to leave or move on until the truth behind her death is uncovered. She spends her days playing video games, eating creamy pudding, and interacting with the people who enter her room, most notably her new roommate Juugo Yama, who moves into the same apartment after being disowned by his father.
Nanana’s personality is bright, optimistic, and cheerful on the surface, but she also carries a deep sense of loneliness. She describes herself as a NEET (not in education, employment, or training) and embraces a lazy, carefree lifestyle, yet she still holds a genuine love for adventure and discovery. Despite her ghostly state, she remains energetic and playful, often engaging in games and challenges with those around her. She is not malicious or vengeful; rather, she seems to accept her situation with a mix of humor and melancholy. Her primary motivation is to have her murder solved so that she can finally find peace and move on from the world of the living. She also wants her treasures to be found by worthy individuals, as each artifact she hid was meant to test the ambition, intelligence, and courage of those who seek them.
Within the story, Nanana serves as both a mentor and a catalyst. She provides crucial information and hints to Juugo about the locations and nature of her Collection, guiding his investigation into her death. Her presence also sets the overarching mystery into motion: who killed her, and why? She cannot directly interfere in the outside world, so she relies on Juugo and the Adventure Club members to act on her behalf. Her role is central to the plot, as every treasure hunt and confrontation ultimately ties back to her life, her relationships, and the circumstances of her murder.
Nanana’s key relationships include Juugo Yama, who becomes her closest ally and the one person she trusts enough to share details about her killer. Their bond deepens over time, built on mutual respect and a shared goal. She also has a history with Shiki Maboro, another original member of the Great 7, who now acts as the landlady of the apartment building where Nanana’s ghost resides. Shiki was a friend and colleague during Nanana’s lifetime, and their past together holds secrets about the island’s foundation and Nanana’s death. Nanana’s relationships with other treasure seekers are indirect, but she has left behind trials and puzzles that reveal her personality and values to those who solve them.
Because Nanana is a ghost fixed to a single location, her character does not undergo a dramatic arc in the traditional sense. She remains largely static in personality, but the gradual revelation of her past and the motives behind her treasure hoard adds depth to her character. The more Juugo and the others learn about her Collection, the more they understand the kind of person she was: adventurous, clever, and idealistic. Her development is tied to the unveiling of the truth behind her death, which ultimately allows her to find closure.
Nanana’s notable abilities stem from her ghostly nature. She can interact with physical objects within her room, such as video game controllers and food, and she can communicate with those who enter her space. She cannot leave the apartment, but she has an encyclopedic knowledge of the treasures she hid and the traps guarding them. She also has the power to set her own rules for the games she plays, often using these challenges to test the worth of those seeking her Collection. Beyond these traits, she does not possess combat abilities or supernatural powers that extend beyond her bounded area; her strength lies in her intelligence and the legacy she left behind.
