Description
Clay Sizemore is a Demon Weapon and a major supporting character in Soul Eater Not!. He is an agent of the DWMA Central Intelligence Agency, which is the intelligence division of the Death Weapon Meister Academy, and is partnered with the meister Akane Hoshi. Although the two are elite EAT class students and active agents, they go undercover within the Normal Operations (NOT) class to secretly serve as bodyguards for a princess, Anya Hepburn.

Physically, Clay is tall and slender, appearing older than most of his NOT classmates. He typically dresses in a formal but slightly relaxed style, wearing black trousers and a white dress shirt worn with the collar unbuttoned and a loose black tie. As a Weapon, his fully transformed state is a slender, elegant great sword with a solid black blade surrounded by a narrow white cutting edge and an unusual cylindrical hilt. He is also capable of partial transformation, such as turning his arm into a blade for self-defense.

Clay’s personality is defined by a contrast between his professional aspirations and his natural demeanor. He tries to present himself as a calm and capable EAT agent, but in leisure time, his nervousness and clumsiness often betray this facade. He is generally laid-back and is almost always seen smiling, maintaining a cool-headed composure in combat alongside his partner. Despite this, he is formal and respectful toward his peers and seniors, and he cares deeply about the safety of others, often intervening when people are in trouble and becoming especially concerned for the well-being of the NOT class trio.

While Clay possesses strong analytical and research skills that earn him praise from his superior Sid Barrett, his effectiveness is hampered by his lack of quick thinking under pressure. He can be gullible, takes situations at face value, and tends to overcomplicate simple topics. He struggles to come up with convincing lies or alibis, often becoming flustered and sweating when he has to improvise, which contrasts sharply with his partner Akane’s sharp-wittedness. For instance, when needing an excuse for their undercover activities, Clay created an overly complex relationship flowchart, while Akane simply claimed that Clay had wasted their money at an arcade.

Clay’s primary role in the story is as an undercover operative. His mission to protect Anya Hepburn is his central motivation, and as a result, he and Akane position themselves close to her, Tsugumi Harudori, and Meme Tatane, working alongside them at a café called Deathbucks. While he tries to be protective of the three girls, his nervousness and occasional bluntness can cause friction. This is especially true with Anya, as after the death of Sid, his professional concern for her safety clashes with her desire to stay and fight, leading to moments of antagonism between them.

His partnership with Akane is key to his development. Their different personalities complement each other; Akane is the more assertive, pragmatic, and flexible strategist, while Clay is more analytical and rule-bound. Although they bicker and tease one another, with Akane often using Clay as a scapegoat, they share a deep mutual respect and trust, forming an elite duo capable of strong soul resonance. Their shared goal of avenging Sid's death ultimately motivates Clay to break rules alongside his partner, showing that his loyalty and desire for justice can override his usual inclination to follow orders.

In terms of notable abilities, beyond his weapon transformation, Clay is a capable combatant even in human form, using the art of self-defense to fend off enemies. His true strength lies in his analytical mind. He is skilled at tracking enemy attack patterns and conducting research, which proves instrumental in identifying the leader of the Traitor organization as Shaula Gorgon. He is also in excellent physical shape, ranking as one of the top students in the NOT class during athletic tests.
