Description
Hajime Kujō is a secondary character in the narrative who serves as a pivotal figure from the protagonist's past. He is a high school student of average height with a slender build, black hair, and dark eyes. His birthday is September 18, making him 17 years old during the events of the story.

Hajime was a childhood friend and classmate of Fujimiya Kaori during their elementary school years. Both were popular figures in their class, which gave them common ground and drew them together. They spent considerable time together after school, often studying, where he relied on Kaori to help him with mathematics, his only weak subject. Over this time, he developed deep romantic feelings for her, though the precise nature of their childhood relationship was never explicitly defined. His life took a turn when his family relocated to Hokkaido for undisclosed reasons.

The circumstances of his departure are directly tied to Kaori's memory condition. Before moving, he planned a farewell party with her. However, Kaori overheard a troubling conversation between Hajime and his older brother, Mitsuru Kujō, who suggested a cruel scheme to make himself the hero. Deeply upset by this, Kaori fled the meeting place and was struck by a car, an accident that led to her unique form of amnesia. Unaware of the accident or the overheard conversation, Hajime believed Kaori had simply broken her promise to see him off, leaving him feeling betrayed and nursing a long-standing resentment.

He returns to Tokyo as a transfer student in his second year of high school, enrolling in the same class as Kaori and Yūki Hase. Upon reuniting with Kaori, who does not remember him due to her weekly memory loss, his initial demeanor is notably cold and confrontational. He struggles to reconcile his lingering affection for her with his bitterness over the perceived betrayal, famously calling her a "traitor" before learning the truth about her condition.

His personality is complex and shaped by a strict upbringing. His mother, who had high expectations and wished for him to be first in all endeavors, named him "Hajime" (meaning "the first"). Despite his family's restrictions, he possesses a natural talent for video games and excels in most academic subjects except mathematics. He also has a fear of heights. Externally, he is charming and popular, particularly with other female students, but his internal world is dominated by a focused, sometimes obsessive, commitment to Kaori.

Within the story, his arrival destabilizes the fragile progress Yūki has made in befriending Kaori. His presence acts as a catalyst, forcing the buried trauma of Kaori's past to the surface and causing her memories to reset more profoundly. Initially an antagonist figure due to his harsh words and jealousy toward Yūki, he is not a villain. His role is that of a wounded individual whose unresolved feelings and ignorance of the truth create conflict. His key relationships involve the central love triangle with Kaori, toward whom he feels a possessive love, and Yūki Hase, whom he views as a rival but who ultimately helps him understand the reality of Kaori's amnesia.

Hajime undergoes significant development as the truth of the accident is slowly revealed. He transitions from a bitter, antagonistic force to a character who is able to reconcile with the past. With Yūki's understanding and assistance, he makes the conscious decision to put aside his resentment and attempt to rebuild a friendship with Kaori, acknowledging her condition and choosing to support her, even if it means not being the most important person in her life.
