Description
Claw, known as Bubu in the original Japanese version, is a primary antagonist in the Kimba the White Lion franchise, serving as a rival and nemesis to the young hero Kimba. A dark brown or tan lion with a black mane, Claw is most recognizable by the damage to his left eye, which he lost in a past duel against Kimba’s father, Panja. This injury remains a permanent scar, representing a long-standing feud between him and Kimba’s bloodline.

Claw’s background is rooted in his rivalry with Panja, a conflict that established his deep-seated bitterness toward Kimba’s family. After Panja is killed by human hunters, Claw seizes the opportunity to take over the jungle as a tyrant, ruling through intimidation and force. His personality varies across different adaptations, though he is consistently defined by his ambition and desire for power. In the original 1965 anime series, Claw is portrayed as a temperamental and brutish figure who relies heavily on his cunning adviser, a black panther named Cassius, for strategic planning. This version of Claw often acts on impulse and has difficulty tolerating failure from his minions. In contrast, the 1989 series depicts him as a more cold-blooded and calculating mastermind, possessing a relaxed demeanor but showing no hesitation toward extreme cruelty, even against cubs.

Claw’s primary motivation centers on removing Kimba and reclaiming control of the jungle. His role in the story is that of a usurper and a recurring threat during Kimba’s early life, acting as a foil to the young prince’s idealistic and peaceful nature. In several episodes, Claw also develops a disturbing obsession with Kitty, a lioness cub who is Kimba’s close friend and love interest. Her rejection of him in favor of Kimba fuels his hatred further. Kimba, for his part, often resists fighting, but he recognizes that Claw’s tyranny forces him to confront evil to protect the jungle. Despite their conflict, Kimba expresses a willingness to accept Claw as part of their society if he ever genuinely reforms.

Claw’s key relationships include his henchmen, most notably the hyenas Tom and Tab, and the panther Cassius, who serves as his adviser. These underlings frequently carry out his schemes, though they are often portrayed as bumbling or unreliable. Claw’s development over the course of the franchise is significant, though his specific path depends on the version. In the original 1965 series, his schemes consistently fail, and he eventually disappears from the narrative after Kimba reaches adulthood. In the manga, his fate involves losing his remaining right eye in a fight with Kimba, leaving him completely blind. The 1989 series offers the most dramatic character arc, where Claw ultimately sets aside his rivalry to ally with Kimba against a greater common enemy, sacrificing his own life to save Kimba in the end. The short film Jungle Emperor Leo: Hon-o-ji presents another unique version, explicitly establishing Claw as Kimba’s uncle and showing how his deception leads to a final battle where he loses his remaining eye.

In terms of notable abilities, Claw relies primarily on his physical strength and ferocity as a large lion. He is a capable fighter, able to challenge Kimba directly in combat. His skills often depend on the adaptation, with his brutish strength being his main asset in earlier versions and his strategic cunning taking precedence in later ones. He commands a small army of followers, including predators like hyenas and vultures, which he uses to enforce his will and create discord throughout the jungle.
