Description
Bubu, known in some English adaptations as Claw, is a recurring antagonist in the various installments of the Jungle Emperor universe. He is a lion whose most distinguishing physical feature is a missing left eye. This injury is a scar from a past duel with Panja, the father of the protagonist Kimba, and serves as a constant reminder of his long-standing resentment toward Kimba's family line.

The character's background consistently involves this pivotal rivalry with Panja. He had challenged Panja for control of the jungle but lost, an event that precedes the main story and solidifies his role as a nemesis to the white lion dynasty. After Panja's death, Bubu seeks to fill the power vacuum, claiming the undefended jungle as his own and later attempting to eliminate the young Kimba when he returns to claim his birthright.

Personality-wise, Bubu is defined by his ambition and a deep-seated resentment toward his rivals. While his core drive for power remains constant, his portrayal changes significantly depending on the adaptation. In the original 1965 anime series, he is often depicted as a temperamental and somewhat bumbling tyrant. He commands henchmen but is not particularly clever, frequently requiring his panther sidekick, Toto (also known as Cassius), to do the strategic thinking for him. In this version, he also harbors a disturbing and obsessive infatuation with the young lioness Kitty, desiring her to become his queen when she is older, which adds a personal vendetta to his conflict with Kimba.

In contrast, the 1989 series The New Adventures of Kimba the White Lion reimagines Bubu as a much more formidable and intelligent adversary. This version is a cold, calculating, and brutal villain who has no qualms about violence, even toward cubs. He acts as a master strategist, commanding his followers with a calm and suave demeanor. This interpretation notably removes his romantic interest in Kitty, focusing his motivations purely on power and eliminating Kimba. The 2000 short film Jungle Emperor Leo: Hon-o-ji presents yet another iteration, establishing Bubu as Kimba's uncle and framing him as a manipulator who tries to sabotage the protagonist's leadership before being defeated.

Bubu's role in the story is primarily that of an instigator. He consistently plots to usurp control of the jungle from Kimba. His schemes range from direct confrontations to more elaborate plans, such as trapping Kimba's friends or manipulating other animals who resent Kimba's peaceful philosophies. He represents the constant internal threat to the jungle's harmony, a counterpoint to the external dangers posed by humans.

His key relationships are defined by his opposition to Kimba and his alliance with Toto, a black panther who serves as his adviser and accomplice. His dynamic with Kimba is one of pure enmity, though a notable exception occurs in the 1989 series, where he experiences significant development. Facing a common existential threat, Bubu sets aside his feud, collaborates with Kimba, and ultimately performs a sacrificial act to save him, providing a complex conclusion to his antagonistic arc.

In terms of development, Bubu's path varies by continuity. In the original manga, his downfall continues as he loses his remaining right eye in a fight with Kimba, leaving him completely blind. The 1965 anime shows him repeatedly foiled but left alive, with Kimba even expressing a willingness to accept him should he ever genuinely reform. The 1989 series provides the most dramatic transformation, turning a ruthless villain into an unlikely ally. Regarding abilities, Bubu is a lion of formidable physical strength, capable of challenging Kimba and having once dueled Panja. His most notable skill is his sheer ambition and tenacity, allowing him to persist as a threat across multiple incarnations, while his higher intelligence is emphasized in his later, more dangerous portrayals.
